The beginning half of the book was real hard to get into. It was well written, but it just wasn’t that engaging. The second half of the book made up for it enough for me to still like the book and want to read the sequel, though. Some of the twists and turns were a bit predictable, but the cliff hanger at the end was *chef’s kiss*. The romance was a bit bland, though. It had all of the typical elements that make up a wonderful romance, but it just did nothing for me. I feel the book would’ve been better if there were more perspectives than just Jase and Kazi’s (partly because I didn’t care all that much for either of them). Once I finally finished this book, I was glad that I did, but most of the time it was boring and a struggle to read.
This reminded me of the Grishaverse books by Leigh Bardugo, and the Shadows Between Us and Blade of Secrets by Tricia Levenseller.

i might have given this 1.5 stars, except it’s 500 fucking pages and if i’m being generous maybe twenty or so were actually interesting.

someone tell me to stop buying books because they have pretty covers

This was a book I genuinely enjoyed reading from start to finish. I found myself using any free time I had available to read even just a chapter. It offered good twists, and although the trope was predictable, there were several parts that made me question it. Highly recommend.
