I read the first book If I Stay about a month ago (read my review of it here) and it was amazing and super intense. I cried so hard that I couldn't bring myself to read the sequel right away. But once I finally sat down with it I was floored. I haven't been able to get it out of my head for days.

Where She Went is told from the perspective of Adam, and he's a very different person from when we saw him last. My heart broke repeatedly for him. I couldn't believe that it was the same character. I loved Adam in the first book, he was my favorite character. But I just couldn't get over the change. He was so unhappy.

I didn't really know how I felt about Mia in the first novel, but circumstances being what they were, you can't really hate the girl and feel like a good person. Yet, in this novel I hated her. She comes across as incredibly selfish, passive-aggressive and cruel. It takes almost the entire novel before you figure out why she and Adam aren't together anymore, and I'm sorry but those reasons just don't work for me. They're very petulant and frankly, ironic, for a girl complaining about free passes and entitlement. I kind of wanted to smack her and tell her to shut up.

Surprisingly, I did like the novel, and Adam captured my heart yet again. As much as I feel for him and am appalled at what he became, he made the novel worthwhile. The pacing of the novel is great and I suppose you could read it on it's own, without getting lost, although I do believe that reading the pair would be best. Another benefit is that it is a fairly quick read and even though parts of it were sad, I wasn't the sobbing mess that I was when I was in the midst of If I Stay. Which everyone is happy about.

This Duology wasn’t my favourite but was still readable and some parts I really did like! I liked the flip to past and present

3 ⭐️ - I enjoyed this more than the first book, but JESUS.

“I wanna push her up against this building and hear her bones rattle. I wanna feel her flesh give underneath my hip. I wanna rip her head back and expose her neck. I wanna make her cry and lick away her tears.”

Um…sir. She’s your ex girlfriend who lost her entire family in a car accident. You haven’t spoken to her in several years. You just yanked her off of a train because you had a panic attack and thought people were staring at you (he’s a famous musician) and you yelled at her and told her to shut up and to tell you where she’s taking you because “there’s been enough fucking secrets.”

ALPHAHOLE, much?! I literally stopped what I was doing to listen and went “what the actual fuck is your problem?!”

And at the end of the book - “I let her hold me until I regained my Y-chromosome.” Like…..crying for the first time in three years is the worst thing that could ever happen to you? That it emasculates you to have feelings?

Just….lots of ick in this.

Also - still think there’s a lot of weird word choices for a YA book. ESPECIALLY in the first one or two chapters. Again, with the “churlish.”

Holy freaking god.

Is it bad that I like this book better than If I stay? Because I do.

I guess I knew before I even opened the book that it was going to ruin me; and I was right.
About 40 pages in, my lip startes to tremble and my eyes to water. 10 more pages and i was full on sobbing.

Mejor construido.

While this is a 3-years-later sequel to [b:If I Stay|4374400|If I Stay (If I Stay, #1)|Gayle Forman|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1221604709s/4374400.jpg|4422413], it stands alone nicely, and has much more guy appeal as it follows Adam's journey through anger and isolation to what's on the other side (namely, Mia). Teens with a strong interest in music, especially, will enjoy Adam's perspective on the darker side of life as a rockstar. Things wrap up a little too neatly at the end, but otherwise, the story will draw readers right in and keep them hooked.
