What was this cousin fuckery featuring evil man?!?

this book was absolutely amazing — everything about it! the gothic imagery and symbolism were so beautifully intertwined and created for such an engaging, interesting, and tragic story. the moors create such an interesting and adaptable background for this story and can be tied into multiple themes. the characters, while often awful, were just so compelling and charismatic that you were pulled into their stories and wished them the best. my favorite part of this book was definitely the love story (if you could call it that) between heathcliff and catherine and how destructive and unruly it became. truly amazing to read about, with so much tension, heartache, and intensity, all beautifully written. i could talk about this for a while but i just think that emily brontë is an incredible writer and everybody should read this book!

A novel about chisme and revenge

(4,5) The ultimate tragic romance. A story I've long known (or so I thought) and now I've finally read it in full. While I was familiar with the main story of the love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, there were quite a few elements that I had simply forgotten or was never aware of. Most of all I had forgotten that the Catherine/Heathcliff romance only fills part of the book and a big part of it follows the aftermath of Catherine's passing and the legacy of the Earnshaw/Linton/Heathcliff bloodline. Also, and this was a major revelation, I didn't know the story was told through the eyes of the maid Nelly as she tells it to one of Heathcliff's tenants. This point in particular was rather interesting because before I had always thought the story was told in an omniscient narrator style whereas it's actually from the point of view of one of the characters who is continually present as the tragic tale unfolds. But it's a brilliant choice. Nelly is definitely prejudiced at certain points throughout the novel but because of her position relatively free from the central conflict, she always makes sure to at least consider this intergenerational drama from different points throughout time.

It also dawned on me, about halfway into the book how timeless these stories of class-transcending romances, vengeful tales of battling families, and hereditary trauma really are. At times - and I say this with the greatest reverence to such great writing - it felt so modern, reading it felt like the easiest part of my day. At other times, its archaic values might be a bit offputting but generally speaking, the boundless romanticism of this classic tragedy is enough to captivate you to keep reading.
