Both my praise and criticism of this is derived from its pulpiness.
Definitely a rare case of a movie outdoing the book, in my opinion.

Not like the movie.. I found certain parts of the book to be unnecessary. I didn't care for the ending as well. However, I'm glad I gave this one a go.

Reading Jaws for the first time during its 50th anniversary, and while sitting on the beach, was a pretty special experience. I’ve seen the movie a million times (I can quote it easily), so I immediately picked up on all the differences between the book and the film. And yep—the movie is better. That said, the book still holds its own as a classic shark thriller. I appreciated the darker humor and cynicism, especially in the way the characters talk—these guys swear a lot, and I found that pretty entertaining. What didn’t work for me was the wife character… she really sucks. IYKYK. The book adds a few extra subplots that, in my opinion, distract from what I actually came for: a giant, murderous shark. But there’s still something fun about expanding on the story after watching the movie, digging into more world-building and character backstory. Just a heads-up: it’s a product of its time, and there are some outdated, insensitive takes on topics like race and sexuality. All in all, while the book gets mixed reviews, I still found it enjoyable. Just don’t go into it expecting the movie, you’ll appreciate it more if you take it as its own thing. I definitely think fans of the film should give it a read.

An excellent novel, that serves as an even better roadmap for one of the greatest films of all time.
DNF. So awful for so many reasons- especially the weird sexual overtone and focus on violence against women???
8% of the way into the book we already have the mention of a rape, a man who dreams of groping a woman, wakes up, and considers waking up his wife to have sex but then she snores and he’s instantly turned off, sex on the beach followed by a woman swimming nude, and said nude swimmer ending up the victim of a shark attack and the most description given to her mangled torso is of her remaining breast. Absolutely disgusting. Like she’s dead why are we talking about her tit.
And then of course the anti shark propaganda nonsense instilling fear and spreading false information about sharks hunting people etc.
I very rarely don’t finish a book- especially early on- but this was just too disgusting for me to continue.

"Jaws" is an enthralling masterpiece that delivers a gripping tale of suspense and terror. Peter Benchley's classic novel dives deep into the treacherous waters off the shores of Amity Island, where a relentless man-eating great white shark lurks. From the very first page, the tension never lets up, keeping readers on the edge of their seats with each turn of the page.
Benchley's vivid and atmospheric storytelling transports readers to the quaint seaside town, immersing them in the fear and panic that grips the community as the shark's attacks escalate. The characters are well-developed and relatable, each with their own flaws and vulnerabilities, making their struggles against the deadly predator all the more heart-pounding.
The novel is not just a thrilling adventure but also delves into themes of human hubris, the fragility of nature, and the consequences of ignorance. As the conflict intensifies, the line between man and beast blurs, challenging the readers' perception of who the true predator is.
"Jaws" is a timeless classic that continues to capture the imaginations of readers across generations.

I oicked this up because it’s the 50th Anniversary of Jaws the movie.
I surprisingly really enjoyed this book, was not expecting it to be up my alley, but thought I’d give it a go considering the movie is a classic.
Well written, with realistic and likeable characters
