Honest and very well-written. Nice companion to the film Blackfish.
this is super interesting. it's written by an elite orca trainer who is also the one who was interviewed in blackfish, which i've only watched half of. so now i want to watch the other half. MAYBE I WILL DO THAT. anyway i really really want to learn these animal behaviorist skills.
Hargrove's book goes into the complex relationship between killer whale captivity and progressing research. Taken from the popular documentary standpoint of Blackfish- in which he was involved it is not hard to guess his bias. This read was everything I was asking myself after watching Blackfish- it raw, emotional, and captivating. I would highly recommend to anyone interested in animals, the environment, or Blackfish.
Really insightful and gut-wrenching look at captive orcas and a trainer who became deeply connected to them. This was a good supplement to other material I have read (as well as documentaries I've seen) on Orcas. The audio version is narrated by John Hargrove and who did a very nice job with the reading. Despite the intense interactions he had with the whales as well as the corporation (SeaWorld) — including his stand on captivity today — the reading came across as a well delivered, sincere telling of John's experiences without being an overly emotional rant. I recommend for anyone concerned with captivity.
This was ASTOUNDING. Written by a man who loves killer whales, who respects them, and who understands the plights and conflicts associated with keeping these brilliant animals in captivity.
A must read for anyone with a vested interest in killer whales and barring them from being kept in captivity.

This book stunned me into silence. Beautifully written, the authors love for Orca comes through on every word. I am so glad to have read this.
Lots of great information about Orcas. They should be let free.

Having been captivated by the Orcas at SeaWorld in the past I found the film Blackfish shocking and heartbreaking. It’s difficult to find that something you believed in was all an illusion.
John Hargrove’s book details how that happened to him too. It’s clear from the many stories in this book that SeaWorld doesn’t have the whales best interests at heart or the interests of those people who are dedicated to the care of the animals in captivity.
What’s also really sad is that almost a decade after Blackfish came out there are still so many whales in captivity and SeaWorld is still profiting from them.
