I really enjoyed this and am excited for the next one. The “monsters” felt like a fresh take on the genre, but I do feel like the author relied on the naïveté of the main character to cover some plot holes / avoid world building. I have more questions than I would want to have by the end of a 500 page book. I also felt like it was more predictable than I wanted it to be. But overall it was a solid, fun, compelling story and I would recommend it to any fantasy fan who likes a slow burn and is craving something a little different from the “fairies and elves” storylines.

Okay, so I mostly enjoyed the world building and the overall concept of the book. But (and it's a bit but) I h a t e d the main character's internal monologue?? Do you love questions? Do you love 6-10 questions in a row? Do you love learning information in only question format? Then perchance this book is for you. But it really distracted from the cutie romance and the story for me, sadly.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, oh baby you aren't ready. (okay maybe you are, but I wasn't)
Ransom is a fucking kick ass character, he won't stop til he's solved what possibly his mother started, that his father is maybe engineering to use on men as soldiers, and to protect the citizens of the continent.
And Odessa's constant growth is really amazing too. I love a woman who isn't a damsel in distress, maybe a little ditzy but she isn't in distress.
Also, fuck the King's
