Really powerful book. I had heard snippets of his story over the years and the tragic accident that happened to their family, but this book really gives an honest and moving account of experience.

His music may not be the style I would choose, but there's no doubt that he is one of the most respected, influential, and humble songwriters of our time. His ending thoughts in the book moved me emotionally - struggling to keep myself together in a bookstore is a new experience for me!

If you grew up to the soundtrack of SCC's music, you won't want to miss this book. As he recounts the stories behind the songs, the journey of adoption, Maria's death, and the path of grief, I'm left with this assurance--My Redeemer is Faithful and True.

I really enjoyed learning the story of Steven Curtis Chapman. I felt that choking sensation, of tears that won’t flow, multiple times in this book.
I can’t imagine living through the grief of a child dying. Only with hope in God can you recover from that.
So in that sense, I really enjoyed this book. But in another sense i strongly disliked it. Maybe it’s because this was my first exposure to “modern” Christianity, where everything is overly spiritual and a therapist can help everything. I don’t think sin or sanctification was ever mentioned (correct me if I’m wrong). But every time they were struggling it was “because the devil was attacking them.”

Raw and open, if you are a fan of his music, you will understand a deeper connection to his family and faith weaved into his story. Many tears were shed in the last third of this book getting a glimpse into the tragedy that shaped his family’s future. It was a great reminder that we all are connected to each other and have our own tragic situations that shape us, whether famous or unknown citizens of this world. God has worked in this man’s life to spread the gospel to all parts of the world and I was really happy to have read his story and have an inside look into what stories helped shape his music.

Audible laughter and heavy tears in response to his stories. I grew up listening to Steven and have referred to him as my “music dad” for most of my life, so getting to read about what has gone on in his life that served as the backdrop for his music was so special for me. And his perspective on grief was impactful, too-- living in the tension of honest and hopeful.

Really brilliant account of his life thus far. The adventure continues. His story scares me but at the same time gives me courage.

Such an honest memoir by a Christian musician. Chapman doesn't hold anything back, including his wife's battle with depression, their marital arguments and life in general. He is transparent about the accidental death of his young daughter and how he and his wife questioned God. However, he (they) never lost their faith, on the contrary, it made it real.
