"Satan is screaming lies over us all day long. And God whispers the truth is a still, small voice. So often the voice we listen to most is the one we hear loudest.

Going into this book, I knew nothing about Steven Curtis Chapman. I had only listened to two of his songs (The Great Adventure and Glorious Unfolding). Steven Curtis Chapman's career has spanned over three decades. This book doesn't just hit the "high points", it hits the "low points" and all points in between. This has made me laugh at times, and also cry at times (especially chapter 27).

The LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD (Job 1:21 KJV)

This verse basically summarizes Chapman's life, especially his later life. Early on, when he thought he would get "cocky" about himself, God would humble him. Even later, when he thought that everything was "right" in his life, God took away one of his children.

The book started out very slow. So slow, that I considered DNFing it. I was hoping this would get me out of my reading slump, but, at first, it didn't look like it would. I had so many things going on, that I read 20 pages in a week! When I finally had time to read, I could not put this book down! It was good to break my "genre routine" of YA fiction. I highly recommend this book!

I have been a fan of SCC for a long time. I grieved for him and his wife when they lost their daughter, and then watched, amazed, as they have used that pain to share about the goodness of God and inspire hundreds of people. I read his wife Mary Beth's story several years back and loved it. When I saw that he had written his own book, I knew I had to read it. This book is his story. He shares about his life from the time he was a little boy growing up in a little town in Kentucky, to now. He shares about his struggles and weaknesses in very raw and vulnerable way, and then shares how his faith has gotten him through it all. This book is equally emotional and inspiring and I highly recommend it!

I attended Anderson College during some of the same years that SCC had, listening to him sing The Imperials' "Part-time Servant" and his original songs with Herb and Brent Henderson, which made me know he would go far. I still recall the first time I saw him on the cover of a cassette tape in my local Parable Book Store, and the registration that this absolutely makes sense after the initial shock wore off. Having been to concerts, absorbing his music on every tape and CD released that drew me closer to God, and reading every article I came across, I certainly remember the effects of the day that spun this family into the darkness of tragedy, grief, and mourning. While our prayers could not remove their pain or immense sorrow, we offered them in hopes that God could bless the Chapman family with the grace they needed to perservere. I finally picked up this book. As an empath, I struggled to start, knowing that the depths of despair awaited. Tears so thick that I couldn't read needed wiped away, and it was my turn to perservere through words that must have been torture to put to paper. But I'm so thankful he/they did. God bless SCC and family; I thank my God for them.

So good!!! I received this book as a gift. I have always like SCC music and knew some of his story, mostly the accident of his daughter. I had read his wife’s book a number of years ago and remembered thinking such a sad story. I really didn’t think I would learn much more. Boy was I wrong!!! This is my favorite book I have read so far. Beautifully written story of SCC’s life woven with amazing grace and redemption, forgiveness, and love! SCC is so genuine and real in telling his story. I feel like I am his friend. Just a beautiful book. Now I want to go listen to all of SCC’s songs. He has an amazing talent in writing songs that make you feel things you didn’t know you felt. I am grateful he is able to share his gift. Please read this book!

4.5 ⭐️ Loved it. Some shaky theology here and there but it's not a theology book. It's a wonderful telling of his life. SCC is a beautiful story-teller. My takeaway - enjoy every moment of the life you have, cherish the children God has given you, life is a vapor.

This fed my spirit, filled my eyes, and swelled my heart. Now nobody's going to hear anything but Steven Curtis Chapman on my playlist for the next 6 months.

Loved it!

I have followed SCC since I was a freshman in high school in 1991 thanks to a teacher introducing me to him. I have always respected his honesty & transparency. This book gave an even deeper view into his life & career. It was/is refreshing to see a known public, Christian figure admit his shortcomings, failures, questioning God, heartbreak, & struggles yet his pursuing of God- fully believing there was/is no other choice but to trust God even if we can't SEE what the whole story is.

The last few chapters were just amazing. The insight of healing, loving others well, taking one step at a time through grief, & how God poured grace upon him & his family just amazed me. I knew parts of the story, but how God showed Himself throughout the journey after losing Maria & letting him SEE & hear God is various moments is beyond mind-blowing.

Still thinking through it all & will definitely be a book I read again!

I’m a lifelong fan of SCC, and reading his bio was encouraging to say the least. He spoke to various trials in his life, some more serious than others, but each one describing how he wrestled with God through it.
