This is the first installment of this fantastic series. Alexander McCall-Smith is a prolific writer of many kinds of books. This series sets him apart. The characters and situations are compelling and warm-hearted. I would recommend this book to any reader, any time that he or she needs to take a relaxing, positively charged break.

The series was made into a delightful project on HBO starring Jill Scott as the main character. If you do not get a chance to read the stories, I would strongly encourage you to at least see the TV show and enjoy them that way. Fans of the books can rest assured that the people who created the show obviously loved the books, too and did not hurt them in the process of adaptation.

Well written, and I loved reading something set in a completely different culture than my normal reads. But I was looking for something profoundly light, and this hit me in the feels more than I was prepared for.  I’d love to come back and read it in a different phase of life.

For some reason, I found reading this book a bit troubling. I had heard of the series, but had not read any of them until recently. Although the book is benign and comfortable to read, I kept having the feeling that there was something inappropriate about the Botswanan characters having been created by a white Eurocentric male. The simplistic personalities of the characters are cute, but I imagine they would be more enjoyed by other white readers, the sort of characters that white women sitting around drinking tea would be amused by. I wouldn’t say it is offensive, just troubling for some reason. Full disclosure, I am a white male American.
