It started like gang busters and then it fizzled into contrived victoriana in which fulfillment is forever deferred which is supposed to signify virtue but is only really dull. Great dialogue though.
Although not an entirely satisfying read, this book is a weirdly fascinating account of domestic violence among the landed Victorian gentry. I work with victims of domestic violence, and so it was eerie to read the 19th century version of my client's stories: Alcoholism, adultery, economic & emotional control, child custody battles, and feelings of hopelessness in being unable to leave the relationship. It was very gutsy for Bronte to write about all of this stuff! Unfortunately, the ending is a tepid series of predictable marriages and the heroine is a bit of a religious nut.

This book is so underhyped! I found this to be a page turner.
I love how outrageously feminist this must of been at the time it was written. The very religious bits were a little jarring to me, but still interesting.
I don't know why people aren't reading this! I liked this one as much, if not more, than Wuthering Heights! (Definitely more than I liked Jane Eyre.)
It's very interesting that both this book and Jane Eyre contain romances where one of the characters is already married. And that both these situations are resolved by death. But the positions are gender swapped. Much to think about.

A bit slow and repetitive. Glad to experience but didn’t love it.

The emotional account of marriage, domestic abuse, separation, and custody was deeply relatable and felt shockingly contemporary. What a groundbreaking and powerful book for its time.
