OH MY GODDDD ANNE BRONTË I WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOUR GAME
This reminds me of Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens because it’s so good but no one talks about it

Finished reading Anne Brontë's 1848 novel of domestic cruelty and escape. Huntingdon is a devastatingly sustained portrayal of a 'can't you take a joke, love?' sniggering, if superficially charming, bully, and the passages of the initially naive Helen alternately suffering through, or trying to stand up to, him are compelling. I'm less convinced by the character of Markham who frames the story, and Anne's extremely strongly expressed (if somewhat unconventional) Christianity isn't exactly my thing. Definitely worth the read.

I agonised over what rating to give this for ages. In the end, it loses points because the middle section from Helen's diary was just a biiiittt too long for my tastes. It was the only part of the book that started to enter slog territory
Otherwise; a FANTASTIC book! I adore the setting and the characters and their relationships. Sometimes the themes felt like they were hitting me over the head (RIP Lawrence) but it didn't take away from my enjoyment. I especially enjoyed Markham's growth and getting to look back after reading Helen's diary and getting to go ooohhhh that's why!!
A book that was very readable and very easy to pick up because I was thinking about it often

It would have been 5 stars except I did not like what the heroine did at the end of the book.
Great read though.
