I loved the writing and storytelling and couldn’t put the book down; and without a doubt, the ending tied up loose ends and was beautifully written, yet I kind of hoped for and expected something more dramatic &/ emotional

This book is nothing I expected and everything I expected. It’s a really enjoyable, tense family drama with a dose of social satire that is hard to put down. While it successfully conveys emotions and psychology of each character and situation, the writing can clunky and drawn to  superlatives to repeatedly say “he’s so handsome, she’s gorgeous, he’s the top star, she’s the top model” in different ways. There was also so much buildup to this
catastrophic, destructive mansion fire
right from the first pages to only actually happen in the last pages but in a manner that is anti-climactic.

TJR has a way of writing that pulls you in and makes you forget that you're reading. I immediately became invested in the lives of the Rivas. Part one of the book is non-linear, giving us the back story of the Riva family (you will recognize Mick Riva if you read Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones) while also setting the scene for the infamous party that is about to happen. Part two is the party, and the fallout. At its core this book is about messy family dynamics and overcoming the trauma handed down from previous generations.
