Maybe three and a half stars? I feel like my rating is the result of unfair expectations.

I really miss the show "Lucifer" (hey, Netflix, still waiting on season 4 over here, thanks), and there's a similar dynamic to Deckerstar (Chloe Decker/Lucifer Morningstar) going on here--Lucien/Lucifer at first just attracted to a good woman and then actually falling for her. Or maybe not "falling" (since he already did that--*ba-dum-tiss*), but becoming a better, if also physically weaker... entity.

Anyway, I'm so used to the slow burn of the Chloe/Lucifer relationship in "Lucifer" that I think the rapidity of Lucien's transformation in the narrative of Midnight with the Devil felt, comparatively, too easy.
Also, I was expecting more angst from this setup; there's a bit, but it doesn't stay very dark for long. And the sex scenes aren't over-the-top, maybe some extra-light BDSM.

Not a bad romance read (read: cliche, but cute), but not the sinfully wicked story I was expecting based on the synopsis and the recommendations.
Spoilers beyond this point...
Lucien/Lucifer is supposed to be this very experienced, very dominating sexual powerhouse and while it was hinted at and promised in the beginning, the explicit scenes were kind of lackluster. I liked the “the devil isn’t a bad guy” angle the author worked, I generally enjoy stories where the bad guy isn’t bad. But the ending felt like a very rushed wrap up, and I read cliche romance novels FOR the cliche, but the whole your life for hers deal with god was too much.
And so many questions unanswered!! Andras was okay with just letting his boss leave him all the shit he had to deal with in hell? Does the “Lucifer gone from everyone’s mind” change a ton of shit, other than how Amara and Diana become friends? Does Jimiel stay in Diana’s class, if she even finishes school?

I wish there ending had more meat to it but for a dark romance this was SO CUTE.
Diana is in the hospital chapel on the last night of her father's life when the devil offers her a deal. Sell your soul and I will save your father. It's an intriguing storyline. It's got that forbidden fruit aspect that I have to admit is what drew me in.
I've never read this author before so I took a gamble to see if this could be something for me. I enjoy a dark read, but not too dark. Having Satan as the Hero, the author could take this to the darkest level she wanted to.
I've found that I like Emma Castle's writing and the way she can tell a story. However, I was surprised to find that this book wasn't dark at all. It's actually a very safe read. I did enjoy the way the book turned out and I wasn't expecting that ending.
It's actually a very sweet love story. I think that sweetness took the forbidden aspect that drew me in the first place, out of the equation. I wanted this to be just a tad bit darker and for Lucian to have more of a dark intensity to him and how he was with Diana.
I think expectation can change how you view a book so if you're expecting dark, this is not it. I would like to come back to this book another time and re-read it. I think going in knowing how sweet it is, I'll enjoy it more the second time around. ARC provided by NetGalley.

Diana's father is dying of cancer when a tall, dark, and handsome stranger shows up and offers her a deal. Her father's life in exchange for her submission for the next three months. Oh, and her immortal soul. As Diana and Lucian spend more time together, steamy sex starts to turn into feelings that neither of them expected. But he is the devil and she a mere mortal and something has to go wrong.
Well, I finished this book. That's about all I can give it. It starts out good. The sex scenes are steamy and Lucian is deliciously dominate. But as the story progresses, Lucian turns from a deliciously dark devil to a brooding, misunderstood gentle angel.
And if that is what you like, go for it! But that's just not for me.

I prefer strong female leads that kick ass. Sorry, not for me. It’s very well written but it honestly didn’t do anything for me. More than half way through the book and I couldn’t finish.
