An overly generous rounding up from a 1.25 for an ostensibly interesting story concept ruined by the blandest most boring writing barely hiding behind "darkness" that amounts to an edgelord competition for most mentions of "butt fucking" and a callous, bereft parade of rape and abuse. Awful.

On a second thought, I hated this so much I rescind the generosity. One star.

The setting is interesting, the mystery is intriguing, and the overall setup has a ton of potential but the execution is really not there. It’s a story full of flat, uneven characters and pacing that is all over the place. It’s apparent that it’s the author’s first novel - he’s got a ton of potential spilling out of this book but it needed refined. Also, just so much description of gore, like a lot.
