The setting is interesting, the mystery is intriguing, and the overall setup has a ton of potential but the execution is really not there. It’s a story full of flat, uneven characters and pacing that is all over the place. It’s apparent that it’s the author’s first novel - he’s got a ton of potential spilling out of this book but it needed refined. Also, just so much description of gore, like a lot.

It’s not often that a book ends better than how it starts. And it’s not often that the start is already very good when that happens. This book was fun to read the entire time. Compelling characters, an interesting and well crafted story, a few times where it was actually funny. It tackles some serious topics in a way that makes them feel manageable, and because you care about the characters the serious bits hit. Not for everyone, but I would recommend it for most people.

That was unexpectedly rad! Like "American Gods" turned up to edgy 11, reminds me a lot of "Middlegame" by Seannan McGuire.

The only thing is that paperback has ridiculously small font with very dense typesetting. See if you can get a better edition or straight-up buy e-book version.

my thoughts: what the fawk

It's been a while since I read weird shit like this and it lowkey didn't disappoint because in a way there was also some beauty in it. (Weird right?) This book is so fresh and unique, unlike anything I've literally ever read. It was oddly gruesome and derogative at times, yet also maintained a humorous deadpan tone. Honestly, what the fuck. From the blurb, I expected more discussion around God & Father etc but we got like little to none which disappointed me because I was actually looking forward to a philosophical discussion.

There was a specific chapter at the end, that I loved: Chapter 14, when she has that conversation with a character I won't name— it felt bittersweet and full of love/admiration (despite everything) which just goes to show what a complex dynamic the author has created in this book.

There was a concept introduced- 'heart coal' which basically refers to the thing in someone's life that will always bring out a softness in them despite the cold world they live in. And I just found that fucking beautiful.

The magical side of the world and the system was so addictive to read about, I wish we got more and I wish there were actually more books like this, because I feel like this one had no boundaries. It kept getting bigger and bigger, which I loved but also kinda wanted more philososphy and discussion among the librarians as to where father was because that's what the blurb said we were gonna get!!

Honestly don't know how to rate this book but it feels like a 3.75.

This book is so strange but so damn good. I of course, love books like this. If you like Chuck Palihniuk or Neil Gaiman, you should love this. Suprisingly, this book has a lot of gore I didn't expect at first.
I can't recommend this enough. Goes into my favorites list .

Wow. I’d been wanting to read this for so long, and am regretting how long I put it off. Such a great book, love this type of fantasy, where it blends really well with realism. I love how all the dots connect at the end and really wish there was a sequel.

What an absolutely bizarre, fascinating book. Captivated the entire way through.
