Delightfully looong tale of a young girl sold into the sex slave trade for betraying her mother. She becomes involved with a lot of upper class people, her naivety, charm and beauty leads her to be involved in dangerous and exciting situations--including becoming a revered heroine, at the cost of again, betraying someone close to her. Lots of adventure, a little kinkiness (lol), some murder, war, and suffering. Amazing descriptions make you feel as if you are right there along Maia. There are many different characters and places with unusual names which can be difficult to keep track of at times. The book does include a map and list of characters for handy reference--you will definitely need it! Nice ending too, that doesn't leave you disappointed.
Its always a good romp in the hay with "a bouncy bouncy girl," as Richard Adams likes to refer to Maia as. The way this 16 year old character is described I envision a classic anime character - long wavy blond almost white hair, big starry blue eyes, a smile that never quits, big double D bounce bouncy titties, and a southern accent. Thank god for the maps and the character guide at the beginning....
Adam's writing is really descriptive and immersive which I love. Is the story a little misogynistic? Yasss but its starts of with all kinds of soft porn and its kind of an old book written by an old white guy.... why do I keep rereading this every 10 years? I love Maia and her bff/lover Occula. The world building is great and he describes parties that I would want to go to. So I guess its basically a brain vacation.....something I desperately need at the star of Miss 'Rona's visit....
If you do decide to read it, get the black cover edition. Its way prettier than the mauve one. lol

I've been pestered to read this book for years. The downside was the only copy we had in the house was falling apart. I finally decided to take off the loose pages and lay them to the side and read the book with gentle hands. It was better than I expected and I'm glad I read it. Of course now I have to read Watership Down.
Ugh, this is the 3rd time I have tried to read this book. Stick a fork in me, I'm done.
Edit: this is five hundred THOUSAND words long. FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND WORDS LONG! That's longer than the ENTIRETY of the Lord of the Rings. I am bowled over, staggered, unbelieving, uncomprehending. I knew this was going to be long but I thought it would be, like, 300k. This is so fucked up. This is so crazy. I cannot believe I read this. No goddamn wonder it took me months to read.
I was going to give this 4 stars but bumped it up a whole star for the Occula-in-Urtah chapter (no spoilers). It was worth reading this entire book just for that chapter!!! The Shardik callbacks...fuck!

This took me a while to get through the first time...but once I got past the middle section (not a lot of development) it was pretty good.
I wish we had a book from Occula's point of view. She's far more interesting.
I read the first half of this as a child - people aren't kidding about how unbelievably long it is, even if you are used to reading 1000+ page books, it just seems like it's not going to end. And for the most part, I think that was a good thing. Mostly I remember being sucked into some extremely foreign adventure. This book is out of print now as far as I know and I never finished it when I was a kid (the library finally demanded that I stop re-checking it out). A few years ago my parents surprised me with a copy for Christmas that they'd hunted down from some online used book seller. I have yet to reread it. I suppose it's a daunting thing to me. But I will read it in its entirety when I'm ready, and it should be a good time.
