There is a lot of the darker side of the human experience covered in this book, and it can be gruesome at times.

It also tells stories of overcoming that violence and trauma without diminishing the fact that damage has been done and is not wiped away forever in a state of "having recovered".

I loved the well-written and very subtle foreshadowing carefully laced throughout the story with tremendous pay-off.

Bardugo's calling seems to be as a screenwriter, not an author, dolling out MCU-worthy quips every page to distract from the repetitive plot beats. The book very quickly begins to feel stale, going in a loop of "oh no we're doomed!-yay, it worked out fine!-oh no! we're doomed!-Kaz fixed it, it's alright!" well past the 400 page mark.

The short version of this review is "it was okay".

I suppose I expected something else. I heard this book raved about everywhere I went; it's among the top recommendations for fantasy in nearly every site I visited, and I've had it recommended directly to me more times than I can count. And so I suppose I was... 'disappointed' is much too strong a word. Underwhelmed. Underwhelmed will do.

I don't know what I did expect; I know it was more than this actually was. Don't get me wrong, the book is good. It is extremely entertaining and not badly written at all; the heist is exciting and the protagonists fun to read. So what was missing? I don't know; it might have been many things. I kept wishing the characters were older all the time. Seventeen is simply too young for some things not to break my immersion; I kept imagining them older, early twenties at least. I also kept wishing I couldn't tell exactly where each thing was going when it came to their relationships and interactions. Predictability isn't necessarily bad, but I feel like, in this case, it drew me out of the story. I feel like I got through it without caring what happened about any of the characters, at all. And it's not that they're underdeveloped or badly written, because they aren't, at all. guess I just... couldn't quite get into it.

Maybe it was simply not meant for me, and that's all right! Don't let that deter you from giving it a chance. I still enjoyed the read, and finished it in only a couple of days; I'll probably read the second one, too.
