AMAZING! If you haven't read it you're truly missing out. Worth all the hype and more.

This story sucked me in, and I binge-read it in one day. The characters were compelling and three-dimensional, and despite their morality lingering in various shades of gray, I still found myself rooting for them. Or maybe I was drawn to them BECAUSE they weren't perfectly good heroes. They felt real and complex.

As for the plot, it was engaging and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the entirety of the book. The only criticism I have is that sometimes it felt like it relied too much on Kaz's ability to plan several steps ahead to get them out of seemingly impossible positions. Perhaps in a reread I might discover that there was more foreshadowing, but in my first read it took away some of the stakes. By the end of the book, any danger they were in wasn't as convincing because I assumed Kaz would present a solution at the last second. Despite this, however, my love for the characters more than made up for this shortcoming and I plowed through until the very end, still wanting more. (And luckily there is another book!)

Bardugo's calling seems to be as a screenwriter, not an author, dolling out MCU-worthy quips every page to distract from the repetitive plot beats. The book very quickly begins to feel stale, going in a loop of "oh no we're doomed!-yay, it worked out fine!-oh no! we're doomed!-Kaz fixed it, it's alright!" well past the 400 page mark.
