Epic fantasy heist novel with the most incredible cast of charaters that hold their stance all over the alignment chart. There's fun, there's banter and there is beautiful and dramatic inner monologues and snappy one-liners. You get to dive into most of the characters' inner lives and it's incredible how well they are seperated from each other, and how each character can have a different perception of each of the others in their group. Each dynamic is unique and is reflected in their views of each other.

I adore SOC. The characters, their motivations, their backstory, and how all these different characters interact with each other. Intense, has you on your toes.

Absolutely delightful, a fantasy heist story with distinct Leverage tones (and I mean that in the best way possible) and really compelling characters! The character voices were all really distinctive, and I was super impressed by how each character’s POV chapters really felt like they were from different people. And a good heist is hard to write, and this book really pulled it off! I also enjoyed the further worldbuilding of the Grishaverse (a name that does, unfortunately, make me laugh). Once I got over the characters apparently being 17 (some of the very overwrought and dramatic narration is funnier than it is intended to be given that the characters are teenagers), I enjoyed this book a lot.

Leigh Bardugo’s writing was just amazing. Her world building was incredibly detailed and she made all of the characters come to life in such a beautiful way. The characters were what made the book so amazing.

“A gambler, a convict, a wayward son, a lost Grisha, a Suli girl who had become a killer, a boy from the Barrel who had become something worse.”

I tried to get into this book without having an opinion in advance, as it gets hyped a lot. But I was amazed.
Each of the characters have their own ambitions and chances are high you’ll like at least one of them. For me, I enjoyed them all. They all have led different lives but still ended up together in a way that made sense and wasn’t too farfetched.
Also, I liked the little mentions of things that happened in the Shadow and Bones trilogy two years prior.
Nothing major or that important to the plot, but it was a nice touch.
There might be a lot of new terms at first but once I got into it, it wasn’t that hard to follow.
The different emotions in the scenes were balanced well. Sometimes dark, funny, tense, sad, maybe even a little bit of hope for some of the characters sometimes. It made the book easy to get through and gripping.
Couldn’t put it down and I am starting with the second one right away.

“She wouldn't wish love on anyone. It was the guest you welcomed and then couldn't be rid of.”
