Poor Esméralda died while she was in love with phoebus , She died for him , It's very painful that she died and she thought that he loved her and in every time she was saying his name she was saying darling before it .. it's a very painful miserable novel.

My criticism of the author that he didn't illustrate any obvious reasons for phoebus to be as cruel as he was to Esméralda .. he wanted to create misery from the vain.

They should have put Goat Man in the Disney film. Cowards.

Super depressing tragedy, beautifully written. Except for the ridiculous chapter that is a written map of Paris. Hugo seems to love extraneous history-geek breaks from his compelling, epic, gorgeous narratives. Hence, no 5 stars.

Also. Why in the actual HECK would Disney EVER think this would make a good children's story? It is wretched, tragic, creepy, violent, and deeply disturbing. The only thing appropriate for kids is Djali, the sweet little goat.

Still, it's a classic for a reason. Powerful.
