I really enjoyed this for the atmosphere and the writing style. The whole story flowed perfectly and I can’t wait to read more by this author.

As much as I didn't enjoy most of the book, that ending was exquisite. I am actually shocked by how much I liked that ending. I did not think this story was salvageable, but it turns out I was wrong.

It is almost 3 am. how am I supposed to sleep now?

Okay okay, chill. I'm good, everything is alright. This was so gooood. I mean one time I was so creeped out that I was thinking that I'll need to have the lights on when going to sleep.

Nevertheless, I loved this story. And I thought I would finish the book tomorrow but then u was like nope, I need to read it or I won't be able to sleep. I have no regrets lol.

Okay, so about the book. Writing was so fine and so smooth, I really appreciate when it is written like that otherwise I cannot get into the story and feel dumb, the story so captivating, and when everything began to unravel I couldn't keep my eyes off the book, even at some point I had to go back because I read too fast.

I realized it is not a review and some rambling so excuse me but honestly don't know what to say.

Everyone, just give it a try. At some point you just doubt everything but damn when it all come clean owo. All those twists and turns though I'm really impressed.

I loved the lore of the island. I was drawn into the lore and functioning of the island, to the point that whenever the 'mainland' was talked about I couldn't care less. The same with the pantheon of gods the book tried introducing. I only ever cared about Pontus and his cultural role on the island. I got a bit lost whenever the other gods came up as well as any lore specific to the mainland people, just because most of the book is specific to the island itself and the sea.

Inside the family house, I had a good sense of the vibe and the emphasis on island life versus however the non-islanders lived. I enjoyed the mystery leading up, but then when the curtain was pulled away to reveal the systems beneath, that really took away the interest for me. The hint of magic was what made it fun for me. I didn't find this particularly scary aside from a few gory scenes.

The romance was eh? I cared more for the family dynamic and how they engaged with each other than I did for most of the romantic bits. So I might've preferred a version with no romance at all. The occasional drama was fun but again, I didn't need it nor was I really looking for it here.

Not for me! It was too creepy of a vibe and the big reveal felt like a cop out.  Also just too long! Could’ve been condensed

I don't read too many (okay, any) current YA books, but a gothic, ocean-themed retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses was brought to my attention. I was like, I can give that a try. This fairy tale was for some reason one I really liked and remembered, but I only ever read one version in an illustrated bind up of a bunch of stories...

I have to say it surprised me, and I liked it more than I thought I would. It wasn't perfect, and there are some things I could leave behind (teen romance that really isn't important to the plot), but it had a pretty good creepy factor and fun elements and twists based on the classic fairytale.

The setting and atmosphere is probably my favorite aspect. The fantastical elements were a little unexpected and kind of appear all of a sudden. Because there is a nice build-up until about just after the middle, is this a person or something worse...?

Not gonna dive headfirst into more YA fantasy/horror, but I had fun with this one.
