Transphobic, ableist, and just generally not great, but it had some random ok moments. The girls are insane in an interesting way also nothing is more sapphic than planning you and your bestie’s first kiss on the same night
The Pretty Committee is back! Honestly this felt like a throw back to the original Clique because it was so fresh, original, and full of awkward adolescent drama.
The Pretty Committee is heading on a field trip into the great outdoors and... it's co-ed! All the girls have to face their boy problems head on in the worst of circumstances: camping without all their glamours clothes and makeup. Massie is trying to stage her first kiss, Claire is trying to convince Cam to forgive her for kissing Josh, and Alicia is trying to solve the mystery of who kissed Josh! The end result is explosive drama and a shocking ending.
This might be my favorite book in the series. There's just constant action and relationship drama, lots of unexpected twists, and the ending is a huge cliff hanger. All the awkward romantic tension feels so relateable and it was especially fun to watch Massie's anxiety about "lip-kissing" culminate in some seriously awkward moments with Derrington.
5/5

I think I might be moderately addicted to these Clique books. Each one gets more and more outlandish but it's so fun to read. Olivia had some good lines in this one, and Massie and Claire were both the best and worst parts of the book and had some of the more problematic takes. Dylan's mom with the geometry teacher was entertaining, and the ending was a little loco and kind of confusing. Can't wait to see what happens next.
The Pretty Committee Strikes Back is book #5 of Lisi Harrison's popular and controversial The Clique, detailing the adventures of the eponymous clique at Westchester, New York's exclusive and all-girls Octavian Country Day School. At this point, the series becomes barely tolerable for even the most tolerant - every character is diminished and the plot degenerates into stacked cliches and nonsense.
Plot: Massie Block and her "Pretty Committee" go on a school field trip to a local lake. While there, Massie plans on getting her first kiss (while teaching others the same) and Dylan Marvil has an uneasy relationship with her celebrity mother and her boyfriend, who happens to be the girls' social studies teacher and field trip chaperon. And Claire Lyons continues her borderline unhealthy obsession with Cam Fischer.
As with the last book, there is much carryover of disturbing messages - the glamorization of tween sexualization, excessive tween consumerism and tween bullying. Not helping is also flat writing and diminished characterization - Dylan (who up to this point has been arguably the most normal and identifiable girl) in particular has been tremendously dumbed-down and the few yet prominent adult characters are characterized as painfully cartoonish caricatures.
Primarily for teen girls; male readers may be put off by the pacing and genre. Girls who love fashion will greatly enjoy the descriptions of clothing within this book. Older readers nostalgic for high school "slice-of-life" stories may also highly enjoy this. Many readers may be put off by potentially negative messages and other controversial or offensive content.
Positives:
- searching, searching....
- Reading level: Medium (a few hours)
Negatives:
- everything from the last few books
- Dylan in particular has been savagely dumbed down
- adult characters are outsmarted by their counterparts on Nickelodeon and Disney Channel (yes that even includes ANT Farm and Sam & Cat)
Other similar works by the author:
- The Clique series, of which this is Book #5
- Alphas, a spin-off series revolving around a character introduced in later books
Similar works by other authors:
- The "Castle Heights" series (Cindy Ella, Geek Charming, Little Miss Red, Wicked Jealous) by Robin Palmer (superior writing and characterization, more positive messages)
- The "Yours Truly, Lucy B. Parker" series by Robin Palmer (superior writing and characterization, more positive messages)
- "The A-List" by Zoey Dean (flatter writing, even more negative messages and controversial content)
- "How My Personal, Private Journal Become a National Best-Seller" by Julia DeVillers (more positive messages)
- "Secrets of My Hollywood Life" by Jen Calonita (better narrative, more positive messages)
