Looking for a book with a nosy dog-walker, a suspicious accident, and something that just doesn’t add up? The Swimmer by Loreth Anne White has it all!
White is one of my favorite domestic thriller authors, and I was excited that The Swimmer was in the “wife crime” subgenre. It did not disappoint, with unreliable narrators, whole bottles of wine consumed on the couch, and an illicit relationship or two thrown in for good measure. I read this partly as an audiobook and partly on my Kindle, mostly because I needed to know what happened IMMEDIATELY.
The juxtaposition of Chloe, the local dog walker and bartender, with Jemma, the wealthy influencer who just moved to town, was fascinating and unique. Their dynamic is what made this book feel unique, and I was never quite sure which woman to trust more.
This book was full of White’s signature twists, complex characters, and moody Pacific Northwest environment. However, it seemed to miss the mark a little bit with pacing. Instead of an ever-increasing race to the end, it felt like the plot got stuck in several repetitive loops as we switched between the different points of view.
If any of this book's weirdly specific traits caught your eye, you should definitely give it a shot! I’d also recommend it if you’re looking for a quick-paced thriller that’ll pull you out of a reading funk!
