Aw man!!!!
Did I enjoy this one!!!

Again, a lot of bright colours and such vibrant one's as well. The drawings just came to life and from the start I was there with Juliet. I have always known that I love, just love, no matter their race, sex, gender, no matter what they identify as. I know love and I love beings, people and creatures a like. (love and making love or having sex are completely different and can be done without one and another) So I felt everything and I love the journey Juliet went on. It's tough and this graphic novels shows how we can be or are racists without knowing or intending to be one. It shows that women have it rough, but ad the LGBTQ+ and being black and it becomes a whole other story. I'm a white woman and I know life isn't fair or equal. But I ain't black and I adore and look up to those who are. Black women are just so much stronger and they are gorgeous and supportive towards each other and I'm here for it. You could definitely feel the love between some and by the end almost all of Juliet's family members and even strangers who just take her in because she is one of them, no questions asked. They could feel it. I just loved it! And I hope I didn't offend any one, I don't mean any harm nor do I have any bad intentions or feelings. I try to be careful with what I write and the love for this comic and the black and LGBTQ+ communities is just what I feel. Even if I'm not a part of either. I love all of it!

This is the (rare) example where I think the graphic adaptation is stronger than the book, because It trims out a lot of the 101isms that bloated the book and keeeps in only the meat of Juliet's growth journey over the summer (topics: Queerness, BIPOC feminism, problematic white allyship, self-love & self-empowerment, family structures, writing). Gabby wrote this adaptation, so that's part of why I think it's so good. The color palette for the graphics was warm and inviting and it was a great design choice to change the background color whenever Juliet moved location. The text/graphics married so well and were additive to Juliet's learning journey, especially in the joyfully consenting queer sex scenes. A strongly recommended read for upper HS/new adult.

Juliet made me feel seen as a baby gay. I always knew I was attracted to women and men, but it wasn’t until my fiancé and I got together that I was confident even to live and just be myself. I find myself still being concerned that I don’t say the right things or know everything I should as a black queer woman. I’m still learning and loving on myself as I go. Juliet had to go through some things to really find her understanding and find people to really love on her for who she is, and learned some cool historical facts along the way.

I really liked what the graphic novel did with color throughout. Gorgeous style and visual aesthetic. I haven’t read the original book but I could kind of feel its presence, and there were certain sequences that would have definitely felt more full in a novel. Parts of the plot fell a little flat for me, which might be the challenge of adapting a novel into a graphic novel format.

Thank you to NetGalley and BOOM! Studios for providing me an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review

While I’ve not read the actual novel, Juliet Takes a Breath, I can say without a doubt that the graphic novel adaptation is awesome! The artwork is stunning, bright, and colorful. The characters are in different sized beautiful bodies. The story is one that many teens will enjoy and learn from.
A main theme is that white feminism and queerness often does, but should not, exclude people of color, that safe spaces for queer pocs are therefore important, and that when you do make a mistake as a feminist or a queer spokesperson, apologize. I liked that the story also casually and conversationally touched on a lot of important buzz words in the queer community, subtly educating or suggesting what to research.
It was an engaging fast-paced read about first break-ups, self-love, queerness, and coming-of-age.
