I am not sure that I can rate this book. It made me think about so much and listen about things I tend to just want to forget. It definitely was a read that I will always remember and through reading some of his other work I believe I will learn so much more.
We all know the basic outline of what happened to Jews in Europe under the Nazis, but this first-hand account from a survivor — who was only a teenager at the time — personalizes the brutality and loss. Worst is the loss of humanity they all experience in their harsh battle for survival. It’s a short read, but it will leave you in tears.
How do you even review or rate this real life account of the author's time in Auschwitz during the Holocaust? I won't even attempt it. This is a must read for every human.

Wiesel drew me in right away with this heartbreaking story of Nazi Germany and his concentration camp experience. I was at once struck with how little things mean so much -- a crust of bread, a toilet (or lack thereof), a word from a friend. Through it all, God is a central theme. Reckoning with those who question in the midst of a hell on earth, "Where is God?" Can one find God in the small things? Why do some know God better as a result of suffering, while others lose faith all together? I happened to read this in the week leading up to Easter, and I found it all the more tragic, inspiring, and enlightening due to this serendipity.
I cannot thank Wiesel and all Holocaust survivors enough for sharing their stories.

In the beginning there was faith—which is childish; trust—which is vain; and illusion—which is dangerous. We believed in God, trusted in man, and lived with the illusion that every one of us has been entrusted with a sacred spark<...>
