I was expecting something light, gimmicky, and predictable, but the quality and depth of these short stories by some of the best contemporary YA authors we have goin' blew me away.

The Highest Justice by Garth Nix
It’s a rare story that features both zombies and unicorns, but this fairy tale about a princess and a kingdom manages to do so with aplomb. 3/5

Love Will Tear Us Apart by Alaya Dawn Johnson
Lovely little love story between two boys, one of whom is just a tad more different than usual. Lots of great music mentioned in passing. 4/5

Purity Test by Naomi Novik
A unicorn needs a virgin to stop a rogue wizard who has taken to stealing unicorn babies for nefarious purposes. In New York. 5/5

Bougainvillea by Carrie Ryan
Lovely, sad, tale of life after the Return and of what it takes to be a leader in dire times. 5/5

A Thousand Flowers by Margo Managan
Another sad, lovely tale, only this one is about a unicorn and those who chased after him. 4/5

The Children of the Revolution by Maureen Johnson
It’s not often you get a zombie story from an inside perspective. Especially not one with children, celebrities, and farm country scams as scenery. 4/5

The Care and Feeding of Your Baby Killer Unicorn by Diana Peterfreund
Fantastic coming of age story about love and responsibility and finally figuring out who you are and who you want to be. Excellent. 5/5

Inoculata by Scott Westerfeld
Interesting take on the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse. After all, if zombism is a disease, then there must be a cure. Eventually. 4/5

Princess Prettypants by Meg Cabot
Finally a unicorn story in the traditional manner, with nobility and rainbows and idiotic teen hormones. 5/5

Cold Hands by Cassandra Claire
I like the notion that the risen dead are tied to a specific place and that the zombie apocalypse is confined, but otherwise, this love story wasn’t quite my cup of tea. 2/5

The Third Virgin by Kathleen Duey
I’m not sure I’ve ever read a story told from the unicorn’s point of view before. It’s an interesting perspective. The story is about longing and addiction. It’s good. 4/5

Prom Night by Libba Bray
When all the adults have become undead, how do the survivors cope? By holding to tradition, even if it’s just another prom. This ought to be a t.v. show. 5/5

Well, I was torn between zombies and unicorns before reading this book. They are both so different, but I knew I had to choose a side. While the Unicorn side put up a brilliant fight with superb stories like Meg Cabot's "Princess Prettypants" and "The Care and Feeding of your Baby Killer Unicorn" bu Diana Peterfreund. While all the unicorn stories were good, I just felt that the zombie stories put up a better fight. I believe the Zombie team won *sorry Holly :(*

Every zombie story, for me, was exceptional. From Alaya Dawn Johnson's LBGT zombie story "Love will tear us apart" to Libba Bray's bleak "Prom Night"... just fantastic! I can't even pick favorites because I really did enjoy them all. I was most excited about Carrie Ryan's "Bougainvillea" because it is another story in the world of her novels and I loved the first 2 novels. Maureen Johnson's addition was funny, Scott Westerfeld's and Cassandra Clare's hopeful, in some ways.

The mix of the book overall was fabulous though. The banter between Holly and Justine between stories were always laugh out loud and the combination of romance, humor and, I guess, post-apocalypic stories were perfect.

Ok yeah. I read this quick.

I didn't know zombies vs unicorns were a thing so I went into this ignorant and unbiased.

Mostly these stories were good. Some were "eh" - those two were the zombie stories. The short stories I enjoyed were mainly the unicorn ones but the pre-story comments had me siding with zombies based on that alone.

Which makes it pretty equal, yeah?

Definitely a mixed bag of stories. Team Zombie was the clear winner. Most of the Unicorn stories were dull. The introductions were at times better than the actual short story.

1 star: A Thousand Flowers by Margo Lanagan

2 stars: The Third Virgin by Kathleen Duey, Princess Prettypants by Meg Cabot, The Care and Feeding of Your Baby Killer Unicorn by Diana Peterfreund

2.5 Stars: The Highest Justice by Garth Nix

3 Stars: Love will Tear Us Apart: Alaya Dawn Johnson, Purity Test by Naomi Novik, The Children of the Revolution by Maureen Johnson

4 stars: Inoculata by Scott Westerfeld, Cold Hands by Cassandra Clare, Prom Night by Libba Bray

4.5 stars: Bougainvillea by Carrie Ryan

I'd gladly read longer drawn up versions of any of the 4+ stars from the collection.

This is an excellent anthology exploring the perennial question of zombies vs. unicorns. I was pleasantly surprised by the depth and complexity of some of the included stories, considering both the YA author cast and subject material (not that there's anything wrong with YA fiction, zombies, or unicorns). I enjoyed both the zombie and unicorn stories, but I must say I have a whole new respect for unicorns, some of those stories were intense! And who doesn't like zombies, great stories there as well. The banter between Holly and Justine before each story was also funny and appreciated.
Once again, I have to mention the cover artwork, it's pretty amazing! If you're not going to read this book then at least pick up a physical copy and enjoy the covers!

I loved the unicorn stories way more than I should have, since I am firmly in the zombie camp.
