Re-read for SFF book club. I actually liked it even better the second time.

Alys's brother Dorro is dead. Alys is afraid it's her fault.

Sammish loves Alys. Alys doesn't realize this. Sammish has other secrets too, and more power than people realize.

There's a big secret at the heart of Kithamar, the city. Maybe a bad secret.

All these story lines intersect in this quiet, well-written novel by one of my favorite authors.

Well done, Mr. Abraham. Can't wait for the next installment.

Having read the Expanse series, you would think I was prepared for this story. I wasn’t. Abraham takes a story that has most of the fantasy tropes but presents it in a way that boggles the mind. It twists and turns in unexpected ways that make for such a visceral experience.

Alys, Sammish and Orrel plan a robbery in the middle of the celebration of the coronation of a new Prince of Kithamar. What feels like joy quickly turns to ash. And life will never be the same.

Like many reviewers before me, I just couldn't get into this book and connect with the characters. There are intriguing points, but it moves incredibly slow and unfortunately I don't mesh with the characters. This book is not bad! Unfortunately, just not for me :(

The river is hungry for souls, the people of Longhill are starving and the monster that calls itself Kithamar would sacrifice them all just to take back control.

This is a book (like a city) that contains a thousand little stories inside it. Some get told, some are not what you think, some stories are whispered, then carried away by the river and some are lost entirely.

The pacing was what I struggled with most, it seemed like nothing and everything was happening all at once. In the grand scheme of things, that’s kind of the point. Poetic and tragic, in the same way something that means everything to one person, means nothing to a stranger (or a friend/family member/lover/neighbor). There’s several POVs, which are sometimes discombobulating, but also tie all the stories together.
