The book is told in the past tense, all leading up to a chalk drawing on the driveway of the main character's neighbor who is a widower.

I appreciate how the drawings at the end relate to nature that was part of the young girl's life but I do not think young children will understand the words at the end which are also the title:. A Map Into the World.

Is this book about a child and her siblings? The passage of time? Grief? How to help someone who is grieving?

I am not sure.

I give the book 3 stars for it's illustrations and it's incorporation of some of the Hmong culture and words.

Not crying at work, not crying at work...oh who am I kidding. This gorgeous, beautiful story of change, loss, and inter-generational connection is simply perfect.

A brilliant story. It oozes warmth. Through this book, children could learn how to spread kindness to others, especially how to comfort our close friends when they're sad. Paj Ntaub really is a bright and caring little girl. How she always shared the things that fascinated her to her brothers eventho they were still a baby and didn't know what she meant, speaks a lot about her caring nature. And the title, oh, this girl really know how to give a warmest comfort an hug to others.

A Hmong child observes the world around her as the seasons change, an old neighbor dies (leaving her partner of 60 years), and she learns how to interact with her infant twin brothers. She draws a "map into the world" in chalk on the sidewalk outside her neighbor's house (with permission), just in case he needs it. Inspired by Yang's experience.
