This book was interesting and filled with adventure. Although I did find the plot predictable and the writing juvenile. I did enjoy the characters.

Look, I know how hard it is to write something and get it published and all of that, and so I hate writing negative reviews. But also I don't agree that negative reviews should never be written. Negative reviews and viewpoints are valid too. That being said, I'll start with my favorite part: I had a really good time sending live updates to my friend because I needed someone else to understand what I was going through. I would say that the story had promise, except it wasn't any more promising or creative than any other fantasy out there. Lots of things "inspired" by other stories. Like, hmm the man with shadow powers also happens to have violet eyes? What a surprise. Haven't seen that before.
Speaking of eye color and appearances, it was hilarious to me that our MC had "boring" (in her words) brown eyes and hair, but trust me that did not last long. She gets super special eye and hair color later so we know that she is super special. Because people with brown hair and eyes can't be special or main characters (eye roll).
Nothing about the world or plot was remarkable. I honestly felt like there wasn't actually much that happened plot wise. Our heroine is kidnapped. She becomes friends with her captors of course. The MMC had to save her on like at least three separate occasions. The characters did not feel like real people. Their dialogues and reactions felt extreme or childish. When I found out our MC was supposed to be 21 I nearly choked because she thinks and acts like she's 15. I really felt like I was reading a teenager's wattpad story. The editing was non-existent, and certain passages or sentences were so bad they pulled me out of the story. Also, there was an odd number of times where the character described being handed a glass of wine which she would then swirl and describe the notes???? Like, cool you're a wine aficionado??? But it felt really weird and random.
Another pet peeve: people were constantly calling her clever or smart, but she never did or thought anything clever or smart. You can't convince me that she ever had more than two thoughts in her head, and having other characters pretend she does is lazy characterization. I could go on and on but suffice it to say that this was unfortunately, for me, one of the worst books I've read in a long time. Despite that, it was still entertaining, in the way those bad sci-fi movies on tv are fun to watch. My friend will be reading the sequel when it comes out and giving me the live text updates this time around so I don't have to.
Giving one star because it was dedicated to her dog that died while she was writing it

At the start of this book I wasn't sure if this was going to be a book for me. I really didn't like the FMC Shaye, she came off as spoiled and very naïve. However I was fairly certain that it would be part of her character arc so I kept reading and was so glad I did! The story really builds momentum and once it gets going it was so hard to put down!

This book is a fun romantcy adventure. I loved all of the Harland brothers, and the female friendship that develops between Eris and Shaye. Shaye also has a great character arc and I am excited to see how she grows through the rest of the books in the series.

There were some early chapters that I wish were fleshed out a little more, some of the relationship building felt rushed and leaned a little heavily on telling instead of showing. That being said it all smooths out as the book progresses.

There is a great slow burn enemies to lovers plot line with excellent witty banter and lots of tension!

This was a fun read and I look forward to reading book 2.

Tropes:

This was an easy and comfortable read, in the sense that it was well written, the characters were well developped and the worldbuilding was well executed. I was able to read it pretty fast and enjoyed the self-discovery Shaye was going through. Very frustrated with the scenes with Atlas honestly, because I can take an interruption or 2, but it happened ALL the time. I guess that means I'm going to need book 2 ! Nyx is a favorite of mine, banter and wits made him a likeable character. I'd recommend this if you're looking for slow burn, self-discovery, enemies not being the actual enemies, deception and adventure !

I started this back on August 16th, and it took this long to finally... not finish it.  I tried—I did, but it just dragged on in such a typical and cheesy way.  I had to skim through the rest of it and it still didn't hold my interest.
