Good faro book following Shaye the kidnapped princess on her quest for answers in the enemy realm.
Action packed story with slow burn romance. I felt it was written for a young adult audience. Some parts seemed rushed.

Captured princess usually isn't my kind of read but she has teeth and isn't afraid to use them. Rediscovery of who she is and unraveling the secrets she's known her whole life. Finding friends in the one place she thought would never happen. The banter is top tier. And the friendships are amazing.

I'm really hoping in book 2 she let's go of the whole Bastain isn't a monster thing.
I'm staying book 2 today. I hope it's a good as the first book!

This book is the definition of swoon! Every chapter had me melting faster than the glaciers in the Antarctic. šŸ˜ā„ļø

Morgan Gauthier really said, ā€œRapunzel retelling,ā€ and then wrote it so brilliantly I was like, Rapunzel who? 🤯

The writing style is unique and immersive- the perfect blend of wonder and evocative imagery that pulls you straight into this magical realm. Add in the witty banter that had me laughing out loud, and you’ve got a story that hooks you, heart and soul. šŸ˜šŸ”„

And don’t even get me started on the MMC who puts the woo in swoon.🤭  Atlas Harland will have you melting the moment he swaggers onto the scene with his green eyes, shadow weapons, and broody charm. (Yes, Atlas. It’s giving ✨obsession✨.)

I loved everything about this book (except you, Bastian. I don’t even know what you’ve done yet, but I know we have beef. 😤) The world-building is rich and cinematic, the plot is absolutely addictive, and even the side characters had me messaging the author like, ā€œPlease don’t šŸ’€ them. I will not emotionally recover.ā€

These are the kinds of stories that remind me why I love being a fantasy reader. I already can’t wait to dive into the next book!

lisaliest's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 20%

How bad can a book be written? And why is it rated so high? I genuinely don’t get it. Besides the underwhelming writing and the most clichĆ© storyline imaginable, we also get flat, annoying, and frankly dumb characters.

I really don’t want to be mean, but in this case… I just can’t help myself.

Oh my gosh, this book! I knew I was going to like it, but I LOVED it. We follow Shaye, the Princess of Midori, a land where she will rule as a figure head only, subject to her husband's decision making. She grows up learning one rule: never trust a Tronovian, someone from the enemy land of Tronovia.

While investigating a disturbance one night, Shaye is abducted by three handsome brothers. She is horrified to realize they are Tronovians. The story winds through a discovery of her true power, discrepancies in what she has been told her entire life, and the knowledge that the Tronovians are not all she's been warned about.

With vivid descriptions of the cities, jungle, markets, and shops, a slow burn romance (like on the edge of your seat slow), a snarky and vivacious FMC, and a broody shadow wielding MMC (we do love those, right?), this book left me wanting to dive straight in to the second book!

The writing is not beautiful but it is an easy read. The story is good and we get a very well done slow burn with a shadow daddy. What let this book down was the editing. Typos, punctuation errors, wrong words (envelope ≠ envelop) and the general lack of proofreading really hurt this for me; it was very distracting. As I said, the writing style makes it an easy read and while it generally is not my preferred reading level, it did not dip in to cringe at any point. I’ve only just finished and already ordered the sequel.

I really liked the story and the relationship between the MMC and the FMC. I didn’t love the writing at times. The dialogue could sometimes be cheesy and the scene-setting a bit too obvious in its narration style. But I still thoroughly enjoyed the book and l’m looking forward to reading the second one.
