I think one of things that turns a good mystery thriller into a GREAT one is the connection readers make with the characters. Mindy Mejia writes characters that connect people connect with and that’s THE BEST.

I picked up Mejia's newest book because I liked her two previous ones. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy this one as much as I did her others. STRIKE ME DOWN did pull me right in and keep me engrossed. I definitely wanted to know what was going to happen next, so I kept reading fast and furious to find out. By the end, though, the characters bugged me so much that I didn't really care what happened to any of them. Nora and Logan are both cold, selfish characters and Gregg's greedy, unfaithful, and overly obsessed with Strike. None of them are likable. Although the plot of STRIKE ME DOWN is compelling and twisty, the characters are irritating and overall the book is a depressing, dissatisfying read. It turned out to be a mostly meh read for me.

Very different from Mejia's previous thrillers, but it was still twisty and exciting. I enjoyed the sports/business setting and the strong female characters. Fun read!

Nora Trier is a forensic accountant, she catches thieves embezzling money from their companies. Logan Russo and her husband Gregg Abbott own Strike, a huge kickboxing and protein shake corporation. Strike is hosting a tournament and the prize is 20 million and the chance to be the new face of the company. But when the money goes missing, Gregg hires Nora’s firm to find it. What she discovers is something much more scandalous.

This was my first book by Mindy Mejia, but it won’t be my last! I really enjoyed her writing style and this book is so well thought out. I did figure out the majors twist, but there were lots of twists in between that I did not see coming. This book read like a spy thriller and I found it very engrossing...for the most part.

Some parts of this book are definitely slow burn. I found myself drifting in the middle and just a bit bored. Right as I complained though the action picked up and I blew through the last 100 pages. I do think if you don’t have an interest in embezzlement scandals you will struggle with parts of this book. The financial investigation is a large part.

I found the theme of obsession in this book so interesting...but also creepy. Everyone’s fixation on Logan from the way she looks and talks to the way she beats the crap out of people in the right, felt so invasive at times. It really makes you think about celebrity worship and the problems it creates.

Overall, I would recommend this if you like a financial/spy thriller. Is that a thing? It is now. Thanks to Atria for my free review copy
