Astronomo, filosofo eccellente.
Grazie all'edizione BUR l'ho ripreso in mano e l'ho amato. Una storia travolgente, emozionante. I personaggi, fugaci ma ben caratterizzati, ritornano negli stereotipi di genere che ovviamente determinavano la tragedia del 1800.
Un classico da scoprire e da amare.

Going to see Cyrano on the big screen so I felt the need to do a quick re-read to refresh my memory. I was obsessed with this play in high school and it's still magnificent.
If you're looking for a romantic swashbuckling character with panache, wit, and an amazing turn of phrase you'd be hard pressed to find a more apt embodiment than Cyrano. There are all sorts of fun details sprinkled in among the dramatic romance of the love triangle - a blink and you'll miss it nod to the Three Musketeers, poets and pastries, people being ridiculously human around the margins, and just some delightfully sly bits of humor.
I'm particularly fond of the translation by Brian Hooker, but I may be biased since this was the first version I was exposed to and I'll never be able to read it in the original language. It's written in verse and it can take a little while for your eye to adjust to how it's laid out on the page, but the whole thing flows remarkably well. That last line gets me every time! I highly recommend the 1950 film with Jose Ferrer if you'd like to see it performed, since reading a play is never quite the same as seeing it acted. Plus the swordsmanship is top-notch.

Cyrano de Bergerac is the best play that I have ever written and watched. It is so comical and lighthearted, yet heartbreaking and tragic at the same time. My heart is overfilled with emotions each time I read the balcony and final scenes. So many people have dealt with unrequited love that it is impossible to not connect with this story at some point or another. I wept for an hour after I finished; it was so astounding. How I long to be able to read this in French <3
"And what is a kiss, specifically? A pledge properly sealed, a promise seasoned to taste, a vow stamped with the immediacy of a lip, a rosy circle drawn around the verb 'to love.' A kiss is a message too intimate for the ear, infinity captured in the bee's brief visit to a flower, secular communication with an aftertaste of heaven, the pulse rising from the heart to utter its name on a lover's lip: 'Forever.'"
