When I started reading again, I read a collection of short stories that didn’t really hit for me. They all felt unfinished and I was left a little disappointed. I started reading another collection and while I really liked it, I still had other full length books I wanted to read more, so it remains in my reading pile, untouched for months. I also prefer non-fiction audiobooks so that I don’t feel like miss something important. Leave it to Stephen King to gum up the whole works. The audiobook for You Like It Darker is a fantastic way to absorb these stories and novellas from one of the greatest writers of a generation. I found myself quite intoxicated by some of these stories, two of them now amongst my favorite things I have read by King (Danny Coughlin’s Bad Dream and The Answer Man). My impressions of King have changed so much over the years. I used to consider him one of our horror greats, weaving tales of terror that would make me afraid to go to sleep. However, I feel like as King (and myself) has gotten older, there is a wider net for the kind of stories King wants to tell. Sure, he is still a master of suspense, but he seems to be interested in much more as of late. Like he wants his readers to feel far more emotions than just fear.

And this version of King is the one who really cooks.

What a fantastic collection. All the stories were quite different from each other and I enjoyed them immensely. Stephen King is such a master storyteller and you can clearly see it in his short fiction. My favorite stories were: The Answer Man, Danny Coughlin’s Bad Dream, and Rattlesnakes.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed these stories. Some were very engaging and emotional. He's such a talent. Great narrator. Good recommendation from Susan on Next Chapter, Please on YouTube. These are classified as horror but there's nothing particularly scary about any of them. Maybe some are somewhat creepy or have scary moments. It was more character-driven than I expected, and frequently dealing with unresolved grief, which is the greatest horror of life after all.

I expected it to be darker, but enjoyed most stories anyway. My favorites were Danny Coughlan's Bad Dream, The Dreamers, Rattlesnakes and The Answer Man.
