"You can't go around building a better world for people. Only people can build a better world for people. Otherwise it's just a cage."
Had some fears that this would suffer from being an early disc book, but was reassured by all the fun I had. Granny, Nanny Ogg and Magrat are delightful as ever. This one features travel, fairy tales, fairy godmothers, terrible butchering of foreign languages in a true depiction of tourism, and a lot of New Orleans for some reason. Enjoyed it thoroughly.

Man, this one is better than I remembered it. This is about when Pratchett was really starting to get into the swing of his writing and it's so fun to read.
power outage book #8!
[the power at my research base gave out and i had no physical books so i read basically Every Physical Book that other people brought, indiscriminately]
i waited to read this one because i wasnt sure book 12 was the right place to start reading discworld, but this read enough like a standalone that it was still fun

First half was not my favorite, but the last half was very enjoyable
This was my other Halloween read and I’m really glad I crossed another Discworld off my list. I think it would rank below Moving Pictures and Pyramids for me. Only like 30 more books to go haha!
I listened to this on audio and the narrator did a great job making each voice distinct! I also appreciated how the footnotes were read by the guy playing Death and there was the tinkly noise to signify them (although the first few times this happened I was so confused).
I liked the classic Pratchett humour in this. A few standout moments for me:
-the footnote about racism not existing in Discworld because speciesism is more interesting and black and white gang up on green
-when Greebo turned into a human and was naked and the witches were blushing about his dick and sexual power. What even is Greebo? Why is this cat fighting wolves and being all sus?
-when Granny asked Death how to get out of the mirror-verse and he said “choose the real one” and she pointed to herself instead of the mirrors.
I did like the plot of the three witches going on a godmother quest to stop Emberella marrying a frog prince. Manipulating stories was interesting and I guess ruling a city does make you a dictator Lilith.
What I didn’t like was how Granny and Nanny forced themselves on the quest and Magrat let them even when she was told not to! Wasn’t it foretold it would fail if they did come? And Granny was so cranky and complaining about everything the whole time! I appreciate her as a character but hated her as a person! Nanny Ogg was cool, it cracked me up how she kept misspelling things. I liked Magrat! Not sure why the wand only did pumpkin things and I think she could have stood up for herself more but it was nice to have someone knowledgeable and relatable but not cocky on the quest. I do wish she had saved the day though in the end instead of Granny. She wasn’t the protagonist of her own story! Maybe the was the point? No idea.
I didn’t see it coming that Lilith was Granny’s twin.
The fairytales going haywire was interesting, it was terrifying read the part where the wolf thought it was a person.
I liked the inclusion of the voodoo witch. Not sure what the cockerel was about though. Going to remember Granny’s trick of setting fire to herself to set fire the doll in Gogols hand. So she necromanced the dead baron because they had a kid together? And to get revenge on Lilith for killing him? Or is Emberella the kid?
Casanunda the player dwarf was funny, he flirted with everything.
The part about dwarf bread was funny, how you’d never go hungry with it because you’d always have it as a terrible option. The whole catching gamblers cheating at gambling situation was cool too.
The spell that Magrat was under while dancing with the prince, was that the story or did Granny hypnotise her? I kind of got the impression that Granny did that (to lower inhibitions or take total control I’m not sure).
Mirror Lilith grabbing her was terrifying. I thought the premise was interesting about everyone thinking they are the good one and it depends on your perspective and what you do.
As a replacement witch hat Granny got a fruit head haha. Everywhere being “foreign parts” was funny.
The dwarf cave-in was great because they were more worried about the rocks than the people trapped in there, even the chiefs son lol.
