Read this first at 11. I'm 24 now, and it's as good as I remember.

I first read this book when I was in middle school and the movie adaptations were just coming out. I remember the focus on the "love story" that was at the heart of this series. But the Hunger Games isn't about love; it's about survival in a society where twenty-four children kill each other for sport on live TV every year. Katniss has an advantage because she already knows what's it like to starve, to lose someone, to hunt and to rage against the system that forces her to do these things. It uncovers the strategy and psychology of being a TV star and those of being a traumatized teenager put into a death game where traps and other contestants could kill you at any moment. It's harrowing and tense and once the Games end, you realize that it's just the tip of the iceberg.

Read this for the first time 10 years too late and I’m obsessed! I love the story, the characters, the message, the symbolism. It was great. Unfortunately, I’m starting it at an older age and some of the writing seems to be missing something for me but that could just me the limited perspective narrative and the middle grade writing focus which is the point. I love how impactful this story is in so many ways.

Well that was a rollercoaster! To begin with, I found it quite slow going, and although it was decently written, I wasn’t hugely into it. But as soon as the training and the games began, I was hooked! The description of everything that happened was so vividly written that I could imagine everything clearly in my mind, and I was truly invested in certain characters.

Katniss however is a truly annoying character!! I can’t deny she’s brilliant at what she does, but also she’s so stupid sometimes! Particularly when it comes to Peeta.
Peeta seems the most lovely, genuinely caring and sweet guy, and she continues to mistrust him - regardless of everything he’s done for her. And there are times when you can see that she is falling for him too, but she doesn’t realise it, and still thinks it’s all an act… you just want to scream at her!

However, despite that, it was a brilliant read, and I would definitely recommend it! I can’t wait to read the next ones!!

Oh my god! This story was compelling, I couldn't stop reading it. There was something intense and appealing about a game and fake dating. These two combined were a treat. I liked that Katniss was badass and Peeta was the softie between the two. The game itself was cruel as fuck, horrible! And Rue, oh god, her death broke me. I watched the movies years ago but reading it felt different, the emotions I had for the story heightened. The themes were serious but executed great. Wow, Suzanne, now I need the rest of the series. Thanks to you, the audiobook narrator, the story flew across the pages.❤️
