The Hunger Games originally came out when I was in elementary school, and rose to popularity while I was in middle school. I didn't read them then, as I just wasn't interested. I'm turning 20 this year, and I loved the movies, so I thought I would give the books a try.
This book was very interesting, and it did a good job at holding that interest. The audience never knows more than Katniss does, though if you've seen the movies or have been spoiled on what happens, then that doesn't really apply. There were details left out of the movies (as there are with every book-to-film adaptation) that made Panem feel more like a real world, as well as more details in regards to characters. I wanted to know a little more about the other tributes, and the book gave me a little bit of that.
Also, I'm a much bigger fan of Peeta in the books (so far) than the movies. He is not at all the kind of guy you would imagine
winning the games
, and yet he does, and I'm so happy for him. I know how it all ends, but I hope his little crush on Katniss works out :-( He's a sweet guy.
My only complaint is that the pacing was a bit too fast for my tastes, but it makes sense given how focused on action the book is.

Who doesn't know of this book?

Even as I was rereading it, I was being bombarded by references to it in the most random places in my day-to-day life.

The first time I read it was in 2015, at the ripe age of twelve, which would actually make me eligible for the Games back then. That's absolutely terrifying to think about.

This re-read made me appreciate certain characters way more than I did in the past. You also can't help but sympathize with the protagonist, even if her personality is a stark contrast to yours. The ending is a little bland in my opinion, but it's nothing the sequel won't fix.

In my opinion, it's truly justified in being the staple of the dystopian genre, and definitely worth a read.

First re-read. Love this book and as I’m listening I’m taking in just how good a job the movie did of capturing the book. There were obviously a few differences but they got a LOT of details right and only missed a few significant things. What really kills me is how little of a personality Katniss has. Of course I think some of that can be attributed to her need for survival her whole life. But her character is def a large flaw of this book.
