I found this one to be a bit too predictable. I knew from the beginning who was responsible and how they'd done it, and I was disappointed that there weren't any twists I didn't foresee.

Rating: 4 stars.
Spice level: many explicit scenes.
Genre(s): crime, romantic suspense.

Overall impression: a slight break from formula compared to the earlier books in the series, readers are practically told who one of the suspects is right from the start. I was able to guess who the other suspect was too, which is a first for me - though there weren't many characters to choose from, so maybe it's not that great of a feat. Eve and Roarke's relationship was featured heavily, starting off with their honeymoon and then continuing to show them at home or at parties. I really enjoyed the romance aspect, though paired with the mind-control there were some scenes that made me a bit uncomfortable and nervous for the characters. Because of this, I didn't enjoy it as much as some of the other books - though I'm still just as excited to continue the series.

Plot:
Instead of black and white homicides, the victims died by suicide with a smile on their faces. We know from the blurb that they were likely murders, though it took a little while for Eve to work this out in the book. One of the suspects was obvious from the start and was guilty of mind-controlling people to have strong urges and feel whatever he wanted them to feel. The other suspect only became apparent later in the book once Eve realised that not everything in the investigation lined up perfectly. This broke from formula a bit and was pretty engaging to read.

Characters:
Eve and Roarke were heavily featured and we got to see their relationship progress a lot. Roarke has become a lot more involved with Eve's work life and is protective of her without being restricting. There were a lot of intimate scenes between the two of them, which were scarcely present in the earlier books.

Mavis and Peabody were prominent supporting characters. Peabody is slowly making her way up to becoming a homicide detective and has been taken under Eve's wing. It's great to see their dynamic which is both professional and sarcastic, and see Peabody embark on her own path too. Mavis was great comic relief as usual.

World-building:
There was a lot more tech in this novel - with VR headsets being extremely sophisticated. Instead of just showing you a scene, your whole body feels like it's been transported into the virtual world. Although it's not as novel of a concept as when the book was first written in the '90s, I can still appreciate how in depth the sci-fi world-building is.

Writing:
Very clear and concise. It's very easily digestible and bingeable.

Everything else:
The audiobook narrator is really good at voicing the different characters - they're easy to distinguish without being told exactly who is talking. The pacing is really good and her voice is very clear, making it easy to listen to on the train. It's the same narrator for the entire 60+ book series and I'm so excited to go on this adventure with her.

This has to be my fave In Death addition so far, I love how the futuristic aspect is brought to the forefront a little more, seeing both Eve and Roark's ghosts come poking up.

Eve is investigating some suicides which she thinks may be murder, some really bone chilling chapters and complete head twirlers, Unlike the last book i reckoned on the killer from the beginning and how they were working the murders, but in a way it made it more infuriating in a good way, although the usually quick Dallas takes a while to put the pieces together.

Peabody seems to be in the books alot more now, i really love how the author pens out so many fascinating individuals its brilliant and the plot WOW!

4 stars. This series just gets better and better with each book. I think this one was my favorite so far. There’s so much emphasis on Eve and Roarke’s relationship
Spoilernow that they’re married
and I honestly just love Roarke so much. His love for Eve is amazing. I love how he respects her and her job and doesn’t mind taking the backseat and letting her lead. Eve goes through some great character development and I really enjoy seeing her just be vulnerable for a little bit. Even though it doesn’t last long and she goes right back to kicking ass and taking names. Great series and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.
