The serial killer known as The Poet is back. Agent Rachel Walling has been summoned from South Dakota to Nevada as he's left a message for her and some bodies have been discovered. Harry Bosch has retired from LAPD and is working as a PI when he's not visiting his young daughter in Las Vegas. A friend's widow has contacted him as she wants him to investigate her husband's death - it's been classed as natural causes but some toxicology results have shown some anomalies. Soon Rachel and Harry cross paths and it seems they are both on the trail of the same person. Another excellent read from Michael Connelly - love how he's linked characters and stories from his other books to create this story - really enjoyed it.

Ugh, the stupid Poet. And how can Connolly be so bad at writing romantic chemistry? It boggles the mind.

I actually really disliked Rachel and it didn't make a whole lot of sense to me how Harry's relationship with her went. Rachel was a terrible agent and when she blew up the cabin to smitereens that was so damn obvious she should have been fired. Also, not warning the ex-cop that some serial killer was about to get him? What the hell? And how would the FBI not be on him once they realized the guy was killing again?! SO OBVIOUS and ridiculous. I don't usually feel this way about Connelly's books. So anyway, this was not my favorite Bosch book.

I have no idea why I keep reading these. Enjoyable tosh I guess. And I have a friend who has a huge stash of them. Anyway, if you've read one, you've read this. Connolly on rails. The last chapter twist will leave any Brit going 'jesus, America, sort your healthcare system out'. Apt, for the NHS's birthday weekend.

I’m a little out of order, but I kept along all right with this one. Enjoyed the ending, as per usual! Connelly is a master.

I liked this book a lot. I'd definitely recommend reading his book The Poet first, as this is a continuation of that one, although Bosch isn't in the first book. I've been reading all the Bosch books in order, and I started to read this, but fortunately found out that it was a continuation of a non-Bosch book before starting on it.

As usual, Bosch is almost on top of every situation in the book, and makes up for any mistakes with his pure obstinance and relentless pursuit of the facts. I wasn't too surprised to see that things didn't work out with his girlfriend that looked promising at the end of the last book. It just wouldn't seem right if he were not a loner.

I like the way this storyline wrapped up (or did it?) and the little nods to other books and characters from this universe that Connelly includes. I remain skeptical about the idea of an FBI agent teaming up with a PI and about how Bosch seems incapable of meeting an unmarried heterosexual woman and not having sex with her (he's super irresistible, I guess?), but I set that aside so I could enjoy the story.

This was not my favorite in the Bosch series. I felt like the bad guy could have been a bit more developed and the climax was rather anticlimactic.
