I had to skip around since it was a library book with many holds, but I feel as I read enough to say something. I read as much of this book as I could, but found myself stuck with all the scientific words or not wanting to read about the experiences that I myself did not relate to. Suffice it to say, I skipped over a lot of the veteran stories. I feel like I am at a point in my own mental health journey that made it safe for me to read this book. However, if you are not there, stay away. It can be highly triggering although I did feel as though some of the explanations used really helped me to put things into perspective.

A therapist recommended this to my husband to help him explore PTSD treatments that he can try and maybe get even more familiar with PTSD. I found this book informative, inspiring, hopeful, and heartbreaking. It was tough reading about the history of scapegoating PTSD research, and it was great reading about evolving treatments as discoveries are made. Strong content warnings for rape, child and domestic abuse, medical trauma, and many more.

This book was very interesting and I learned a lot about myself. However, I found it incredibly hard to get through as the content is very dense. It reminded me of my psychology textbooks from when I was in university. I recommended this book to those willing to put in the work and time to read it.

This book was a LOT!!!

I initially started reading the dead tree version a couple of years ago, but was so put off by something described near the start that I just couldn't continue.

CW for war, murder, sexual violence
(The incident in question was about a Vietnam vet with PTSD who recounted that after his best friend was killed in combat, he went on a "revenge" rampage at a local village, murdering children, farmers, and raping a woman. All that detail was utterly unnecessary and, as a survivor of rape, hugely triggering and OMFG I don't give a fuck about this dude's PTSD.)

I'm glad that autistics only came up once in passing tbh (though the link between being autistic and being traumatised is well documented, this author would NOT have handled it well!!). It was bad enough hearing so much (ableist/cringey stuff) about ADHD!

Overall, I think it was a worthwhile read, and gave me more insight on trauma, but yikes it was a LOT!!
The author wasn't wrong when he called himself a trauma voyeur (or maybe he said someone else called him that and he had to agree.)
