An incredible apocalyptic novel that follows Melanie through her journey of discovering what the world has come to and where it must go. Though this is a zombie book and includes some well written action scenes, at its heart this is a tale of human empathy, connection, and resolve. The ending is more than perfect and it truly snuck up on me, when I was listening to the audio book I went to check how much I had left, thinking there would be about 25% left, only to find that I had 3% left. I devoured this book and look forward to reading the next book that is a prequel to the events occurring here. Recommended to me by my mom, she always has the best recs.

I was not expecting that ending but it was better than I imagined. Absolutely amazing read. Truly heartbreaking but wonderful.

If you like The Last of Us, read this ASAP

I kept going back and forth between wanting to give up on this book and wanting to tough it out to the end. I probably finished it mainly because I hate not finishing books, especially when I have a reading goal I'm working toward and I'd rather finish and count it toward my goal than give up and have nothing to show for it. My rating was bouncing back and forth between 2 and 3 stars (I REALLY wish goodreads let you rate with 1/2 stars!) As I began reading this, I was hoping it would take a refreshing new direction in its zombie apocalypse storytelling, but I didn't feel that by the end. At many points I felt the writing to be tedious and predictable. I unexpectedly liked the very, very end of the book (more of an explanation of how the world of the book is going to continue after the end of the book). It was a pretty cool idea, albeit not enough of a perk to bump it up to 3 stars. In general, I thought it was pretty forgettable. There are definitely better zombie apocalypse books out there. But I'm also tiring of the genre, so I think I'm going to take a long, long break from it. Maybe until the actual zombie apocalypse comes to pass, in which case it would be cool to read some nonfiction accounts.

The best thing I got out of this book was 1 book closer to my 2017 reading goal.

A fabulous read that kept up a strong pace without being relentless. Very enjoyable, although perhaps not the book to read at an all-day doctor appointment….

I did not necessarily find this a genre-breaking masterpiece, however: it didn’t veer SO far from a traditional horror story for me to consider it as such, despite being a very strong and enjoyable book in its own right. I do feel like a number of reviews built it past where it needed to be hyped, but personal recs convinced me to read and I’m glad I did.

The reveals and twists felt both inevitable and appropriate, which is always appreciated in a horror / survival type story. Well paced and plotted. I look forward to watching the movie.

Great beach read. Fascinating dystopia with lovable characters. The ending felt a bit rushed/unplanned though

A book about zombies that doesn’t really bring anything new to the table.
