A solid 3.5 stars for a decent, fast, horror read. Interesting take on the zombie apocalypse. I'll round up to 4 for writing like this, that made me laugh:
Spoiler "The man's scream is a scary sound, shrill and wobbly. Melanie doesn't like it at all. But oh, she likes the taste! Likes the way his opened thigh becomes a fountain, as though raw meat was a magic garden, a hidden landscape that she never glimpsed until now."

Well written and very exciting. Each character is deeply flawed. This book is about overcoming those flaws to do the right thing (or the wrong thing) and how that impacts people around you. I really liked the ending. I haven't read much in this genre but I thought it was unpredictable and unique.

A couple of things that are left unfinished:

I don't understand why the junkers attacked the base in the beginning. Gallagher accidentally killed a couple at the beginning but that can't have been the first time that ever happened. The base had some supplies that maybe the junkers wanted but it was so high risk I feel like they'd need another reason. Why were they hunting the group so ferociously after the base went down?

Did Beacon survive or had it gone down? Parks says they haven't heard from Beacon is five months. I'm assuming it went down but the group continues to head in its direction the whole book.

I think the biggest plot hole of all: Why wasn't the doctor comparing the kids' brains to regular hungry brains from the beginning? She figures out what they are only after comparing their brains to the man in the hospital, but why did she even take samples from Lucas and Marcia if she wasn't comparing them to something?

Great book! The beginning is incredible but the ending gets a little slow

An utterly brilliant book with captivating prose and great themes that gets absolutely ruined by the worst ending of a book I read in 2024.

The book that would never end! Started off pretty good, but lost it's edge pretty quick.

This is a book about acceptance and how we will deny things and hold on until the bitter end rather than accepting our new reality because we don't like it or don't want it to be the reality. It was a strong theme throughout the book, all the way to the ending that many other reviewers have remarked is surprising. It is, and it is not. It's more of the ending you don't necessarily want, but it is the ending. It is how it is supposed to be.

I don't normally seek out zombie/scifi books, but took a chance on this since it's about to be a movie and am glad I did. It reminded me why I took on this challenge--to force myself to try new things! The book did start rather slow (imho) but picked up after chapter 7 and for the most part stayed a steady pace. The last 20 chapters, you can't really stop, be prepared there!

So this story ended just the way I figured it would by about 15-20% in. It was totally obvious from the first few pages what the kids were, as well, even without spoilers. But, it was still a fun story and I enjoyed it. I thought the cause of the infection was a creative new take on the genre.
