I went into this book blind. Based on the title, I thought hmmmm girl with all the gifts? Probably an X-Men sci-fi vibe. It begins with an extremely strong start. I couldn’t really tell what was happening, it was dark, it was tense, it gave peak dystopian vibes. The suspense was KILLING ME!!! Predicted it was going to be an easy 5 stars!

And then after the first few chapters it turns into yet another zombie survival book. I actually enjoy post-apocalyptic reads, but the writing for this one was really not for me.

There was just too much DESCRIBING — despite pages turning quickly, the plot didn’t move along. A book of this genre already has to rely heavily on its action because the feeling of excitement is what makes them so binge-worthy and enjoyable. Sadly this one did drag.

What made this a little different from the other zombie type read are its sciencey parts! I genuinely think that if the book was more focused on the science behind the zombies, and presenting them in layman terms instead of just throwing medical jargon everywhere, it would have been able to set itself apart from most in this genre.

Also, something that was really jarring was SO much sexualising?? It never once felt like the right time or place.

This book was amazing. As a small part of reference material for The Last of Us, this dystopian novel was beautiful to read. The plot, characters, and detailed imagery combined to make this novel as great as it is. An adventerous, yet emotional book that is a must read for all science-fiction apocalypse lovers.

I had no idea what I was getting started with when I began reading this book. It definitely drew me in to the point I could hardly put it down! I would love to see this as a motion picture!

Well - I had to finally succumb to reading The Girl with all the Gifts. As it happens, it was a very good and thrilling read. Yes, it did feel like The Walking Dead but with an added angle - that of Melanie and what she represents.

There is of course violent, horrific, and breath-taking action scenes where people are trying to survive at all costs. However brilliantly these are orchestrated, the book shines for a very different reason - its characterisation. Our protagonists are no paper cutouts, or rather they start from a stereotyped stance and grow into their own fully-fleshed personalities. The narration jumps from one to the other, giving us different points of view of this nightmarish world but also what drives each of them, from Melanie to Sergeant Parks, Caroline Caldwell the scientist, and the teacher Miss Justineau. All the shades that makes a character are included here and are fascinating. You may not like a character and yet end up understanding their reasons for doing something while still not agreeing with them. The relationship between Melanie and Justineau is actually very moving and totally believable, which is quite a feat when you think about it! Apart from this side of the psychology, Carey also focuses on the ethical dilemmas that this post-apocalyptic world creates. How far would you go to save the world? At what cost? How much is too far? And all the while, Pandora awaits to fulfil her destiny…

A segunda parte, é simplesmente demasiado longa e monótona. E o final do livro, é simplesmente estranho...
