After their mother goes missing, the children and husband are riddled with regret realizing that they took their mother/wife for granted. Not knowing what she had been suffering through and only realizing they should have taken better care for her and she was gone.
The story resonated with me on certain levels. I love my mom dearly but looking within and analyzing our relationship, I'm able to see how I've taken her for granted. I don't truly know her whole story, she's always been so resilient and there when we need her but have I done enough to support her and show her that I love her.

this was a really interesting read. the ending seemed pretty unrealistic though. i can’t fully buy that the dad/husband had that big of an epiphany based on the type of person he seemed to be but maybe that’s just me..

While traveling to Seoul with her husband, a mother of grown children disappears into the crowd. Because the mother has dementia, she can't find her way home. Her disappearance throws the extended family into crisis.
As they look for her, the evaluate this woman's role in their lives and their regrets for not regarding her more completely. The novel is divided into four sections, each with a unique narrator: oldest daughter, oldest son, husband and then the missing woman herself. Each section demonstrates how little overlap there was for how this woman was viewed. Following these chapters is a brief epilogue offered by the oldest daughter from the vantage point of Vatican city.
The book describes sharp divisions among family members: the mother is illiterate, rural, focused on family and tradition; the children are educated, urban, focused on achievement. The father spends his whole marriage resenting his wife only to discover after she's gone that he does have some attachment.
I read this in May right before Mother's Day, but it's not a very cheerful view of family life but nevertheless it's a powerful one.
