Exactamente o livro de que eu precisava para restaurar a minha fé na literatura contemporânea. Uma história difícil, mas escrita de forma tão bonita e ternurenta… Tantos ângulos e todos belissimamente descritos. Cada personagem tem as suas idiossincrasias tão bem capturadas… Este livro faz-nos pensar nos sacrifícios que já fizeram por nós - e que, muitas vezes, demos como garantidos - mas também que não há uma verdade absoluta nas relações familiares. E que é tão fácil fingir que “nada se passa de anormal” para adiar certos sofrimentos… Para reflectir. P.S. O meu conhecimento de livros e autores asiáticos ainda é muito reduzido. Este foi o primeiro livro em que me lembro de sentir o conforto e o amor à volta das refeições.

This book broke me over and over again. The ideas of feminism is melted into the form of a mother. She is easily digestible.
I think that part of the reason the book is so sad is because it’s realistic. At that time there were many mothers like that. Even now.

Each chapter is told from the perspective of a different character and their relationship to mother, who is not only a mother, but also a wife, sister, daughter and human being. The entire book is such a heartfelt tribute to a life lived selflessly for others.
I underlined a bunch of quotes, but the one that really resonated with me was short, yet deeply touching.
Hugs from mothers are a great source of physical and emotional healing. The ending of the book is sure to leave you sitting in silence for a few minutes while you think about the boundless love of motherhood.
