The walking dead meets freddie versus jason in a gruesome read about psychotic breaks within a severely damaged family. Ryan Burke is a 19 year-old young man tied to a dying farm and broken family. Trying to recover from the mental and physical abuse he suffered at the hands of his father, he struggles to knit the various personalities in his mind back together. This book would appeal to readers who like a little horror with their emotional baggage.

From what I read about this book, this was a graphic horror novel. I'm always up for a scary read and it did not disappoint. However: very graphic I found it not. I read reviews from people who say they literally got sick while reading and that was just not the case with me. Maybe for a YA book this is very graphic, but I wasn't really shocked by any of the descriptions. I did keep on reading though, cause the suspension was really there and I wanted to know what would happen next. It was a fine read and scary as well, and the details in the book were plenty. But I was expecting it to be bloodier and more scary. But then again, this is YA and in the genre it's a very graphic novel.

Not sure what I think of this one - I loved elements of it, and it was certainly horrifying, but the pacing felt a little strange and the character development was kind of spotty. Nice audio production with great sound effects by Heybourne.

I don't want to think about this book too much right now. It's too soon. I need several years to process what it was I just listened to. I need a hug.

I liked parts of this. The scary parts were good but not as scary I was expecting based off the reviews.
It just felt like the author read a lot of stephen king. I like king but if I want to read a stephen king-vibe novel then I'll pick up Gerald's Game or something. It felt a little too drawn out for my taste (something King is also bad for).

The meteor felt unnecessary and the Dad's own toy thing too much. That's all I'll say.
It just felt like the author read a lot of stephen king. I like king but if I want to read a stephen king-vibe novel then I'll pick up Gerald's Game or something. It felt a little too drawn out for my taste (something King is also bad for).

Nineteen year old Ry is stuck on a dying farm with his mother and younger sister. Through flashbacks, we gradually learn about Ry's abusive father and how he finally ended up in prison. Thoroughly traumatized by his violent father, Ry survives with the help of three imaginary friends--light-hearted Mr. Furrington, kind and wise Jesus, and bloodthirsty Scowler. Just as Ry's mother, Jo Beth, is finally ready to leave the farm behind, a meteor strike and a very bad man conspire to make sure that no one will ever leave.
The writing is horrifyingly beautiful and utterly atmospheric. These words and images will stay in your head longer than you'll want them to. That said, I had a few issues with the ending, which is why I went with 4 stars rather than 5.
The scariest part of this book was being inside Ry's head. He hates and fears his father, but at the same time seeks his approval. He's afraid to truly live his life; he's so damaged by the events of his childhood that he fears who he is and who he might become.
This is horror at its finest--gritty, realistic, gory, psychologically creepy, and incredibly disturbing. Squeamish readers of any age should step away from this book. Mature readers who like to be scared to death, enter at your own risk.

I can't believe this book is listed as YA. It is gruesome, bloody and disturbing.

A terrifyingly haunting book you just can't put down. Beautifully phrased descriptions of truly brutal images. This book is not for the faint if heart but will not disappoint readers who love a good thriller and are fans of horror and suspense.
Due to some graphic descriptions may be more suitable for older ya readers. However this is a fantastic book you won't be able to put down.

I really was not a fan. I listened to the audio book and the reader was so good that I gave it 2 stars, otherwise I would have scored it zero. I wouldn't have finished it if not for hub challenge
