It’s true that this country needs to fix its food and healthcare systems. The fact that these broken systems contribute greatly to rampant medical issues won’t be solved by deferring to pseudoscience like functional medicine. And vouchers for fresh produce won’t help either when so many wellness influencer demonize various produce and people don’t have the time to prepare meals if they’re not first turned off by influencer lies.

For anyone who has been medically gaslit, ignored and marginalized, this is a must-read. Would also be helpful for close friends and family of people with autoimmune or other mysterious conditions.
I'm surprised I got as far as I did. None of this is to dismiss the authors own experience with her mysterious chronic illness at all, the memoir parts were engaging and I appreciate her sharing her experience
BUT the "research" she did? No. It quickly devolved into wellness culture bullshit with a side of ableist nonsense all steeped in a weirdly gendered tone that fully erased trans and nonbinary folks. Nope, not for me thanks.

This is a hard book to rate, because it’s someone’s real, lived experience. I so value Sarah Ramey’s endeavor—she brings us into her experience with open arms, and lets us look around the museum of her life. Sometimes I felt like we spent a long time with parts that felt like they could go quicker, and the opposite in other scenarios where I wanted to know more. That said, perhaps this mirrors the experience of chronic illness. You want parts to move fast so you can get past them, but that isn’t always the case. This book made me learn a lot and I am really glad I spent the time with it. And some of the humor just really hits, it was very refreshing, which is not what I would expect to say about a book that repeatedly mentions the “bowel Olympics”!

A deep dive into one woman's mysterious illness and a look at the flaws in the modern medical system. If you are relatively healthy, you will be so thankful for your ability to conquer mundane tasks and probably start to look more closely at your lifestyle.
