What had he brought home?
Nothing, say you? Granted; nothing but a charming woman, who, unlikely as it may appear, made him the happiest of men!
And forsooth, who would not go round the world for less?

Praise of colonialism and casual racism meets boring-ass plot meets repetitive deus ex machina and fake-out formula for this snoozer.
I swear I picked this at the library because it looked short, but the Tolkien-on-steroids exhaustiveness of basic vista and culture descriptions is so dry and list-like that it takes forever to trudge through.
Charlie "Something Will Happen Soon I Promise" Dickens is practically Speed starring Keanu Reeves compared to this.

This was a great read for a change of pace. A tad bit antiquated in the language and depictions used towards groups of people in the story and it relies heavily on certain stereotypes, but an interesting concept of travel time and routes nonetheless. A few parts were a bit too much description but you could tell it was an older work by that and the shortness of the chapters. The process of traveling like that during that time is fascinating.
In order to win a bet, Phileas Fogg and his trusty assistant Passepartout must circumnavigate the world in a mere 80 days. Adventure and obstacles follow as they travel on boats, trains, cars, sleds, and even an elephant through London, Paris, India, Hong Kong, Japan, San Francisco and New York to fulfill their challenge. For a novel written in 1873, I found this suprisingly accessible and readable. It moves quickly, there is a lot of action, and the characters are very likeable. There's even a bit of humor and romance thrown in. Who knew?
Great fun.

"Around the World in 80 Days" is a story about mr Fogg and his servant Passepartout, who go on a trip around the Earth, just to prove that it can be done in just 80 days. Of course, there is also a bet of twenty thousand dollars in play to make this adventure even more challenging. What makes the trip ever more difficult, that mr Fogg is suspected in robbing the bank a few days earlier, and a police detective Fix starts to follow him on this suspiciously timed journey.
I cannot believe that I didn't read this book earlier. It's a classic, easy to read, and somehow still really relatable 150 years after its first publishing - amazing! I love the characters and their development, the multiple points of view, the bribes and also the realistic-feeling adventures that the travel trio faces during their 80 days around the planet.
If you haven't yet read this book, please do. Even if you will not like it, you are richer by the fascinating, ageless style of writing.
