Reread 4/24/21: This was just as fun in the reread as I remembered it! Leigh Bardugo definitely ups the stakes in this book and her characters are just as clever and fun to root for as ever. I reread this book via audiobook and I'd highly recommend them. Just like the first one, each character's chapter was narrated by a different narrator, which made it a very immersive experience.
I think overall I liked this book a little bit less than I liked the first one, but still a phenomenal read. I appreciated the growth the characters experienced in the first book carried over and continued into this book and I appreciated that small details from the first book came back around to be relevant in this one. It just goes to show that Leigh Bardugo is a very smart writer!

Twists and turns, highs and lows, love and loss, adventure and mystery. I loved this series. Always kept you guessing and a play within a play. All the characters had development and the story was well paced. The language created the world of Ketterdam in your living room. I will miss the dodgy bunch. Good thing they live on my shelf.

"He lost the shape of who he was-no, he lost the shape of who he'd fought to become"
The job at the ice palace was complete, but it had definitely not gone off without a hitch. Now Kaz and the team had another job to do, rescue Inej, take down Van Eck, and get the money their owed. But nothing is easy in Ketterdam, and the team has to take greater risks, ones that they might not all walk back from.
This book was just as amazing as the first book in the duology. We got more insight into each of the characters, and got to learn more of their past and what they hope for the future. I really enjoyed the addition of Wylans pov and his struggle to come to grips with the man his father actually is. The rest of the team is dealing with everything they went through to get Kuwei, but also the increasing hostility of Ketterdam. Nothing is easy, but it's all worth it to save the city this band of misfits has come to known as home, and the friends that have become their family.

I liked this duology best out of the Grishaverse.
wish we would have got the romance we all really wanted.
feels like there is so much more to be said with these characters.
LB does not linger enough when she unalives characters or makes a big reveal - this is such a disappointment
