A childhood favorite that I read for the nostalgia rather than the text itself.

Nostalgia was strong. Intrigued by the development of the novel and prose - Lewis is very plain-spoken and the plot is simple, which I suppose it also the result of it being a children’s book. He also breaks the third wall often, e.g. ““Wherever is this?” said Peter’s voice, sounding tired and pale in the darkness. (I hope you know what I mean by a voice sounding pale.)” I think this is an example of the film being better than the book, at least for me as a child. The language is so plain and the plot so sparse that the film adds needed colour and excitement.
The parallels between Lewis and Tolkien are evident: a Christian basis (though Lewis’ is explicit in the text whereas Tolkien’s is not), a foundation in Norse mythology (e.g. the Fimbulwinter).
The lack of moral complexity and character depth is concerning. The people are not realistic, and the good/bad dichotomy is not challenged or nuanced.

Even as a child there was something about Narnia that just didn't sit quite right with me, and as I got further and further in the series even the 8 year old me picked up the Christianity and felt robbed.
Read aloud with my children. We all enjoyed the story.
