The problem with C. S. Lewis' books, is that his characters are either 'darkness' or 'light', completely lacking any shade of gray in between. Worse, is that the reasons for that supposed light or darkness are not demonstrated; we are told that the witch is bad, but not why, for example. Yes, she is presented as a sort of tyrant, who brings eternal winter to Narnia. But there aren't any deep problems here.

Other issue is Aslan. Yes, it is easy to understand that he is a representation of Jesus. But we are told the story of Jesus in the Bible, and therefore we get to understand what made him the man he was. Aslan is presented as this paramount of absolute purity, and although he inspires both love and respect, he seems to appear as an easy solution for all the heroes' problems.

Having said that, C. S. Lewis created a fantastic world for young / teen readers to enjoy. It lacks substance and problems, something to make you think, but his prose is quite enjoyable and easy to read.

Firstly the narrator has the perfect voice for this story. As to the book. I read all the books as a child and loved them. Coming back as an adult the story was the one I remembered but I’d forgotten how naive and old fashioned in style the book was. In the dedication C S Lewis says he’s writing a fairy tale and in style the book is much more like a fairy tale than a modern style fantasy. Also very British and very sexist. Still an enjoyable read though.

Re-read a childhood classic (since Lewis says “one day you will be old enough to read fairy tales again”); only took about 1.5h! Just as magical as I remembered it.
